removing a starter motor

I have had a brilliant guy who sells starter motors trying to identify it from the photos, as said, Beta didnt know which starter motors were used a few years back, I know its out put is .8, but is it a 9 teeth or 8? Beta now sell starter motors and solanoids at about £500, but they are the wrong ones anyway. Beta have found one of their old ones but cant be certain its right till the old one is out.

Don't cut the mount off. That design "fault" is present on all marinisations of the small Kubota including my Nanni. Undo the screws holding the mount to the bearer and remove the bracket from the cylinder block. You will have to support that corner of the engine while you do it,

Just had a look at the pictures again, and the bolts for holding the engine mount bracket to the engine are under the area that I can get to, ie behind the bearers, and where the keel narrows right in, so wouldnt get tools in there, but could get to 'feel' the nuts but not be able to see them at the same time, or move a tool on them. Could just about get a spanner on the mount to bearer bolts, at the time we fitted it, we had to cut a notch out of the woodwork in order to tighten the coach bolt.

update, finally got the old one out by cutting a bit off the end, and got the new one in by removing the engine mount nut, the top of the bolt and trimming a few other bits with the angle grinder, it was tough and really difficult. Couldnt get the bracket off, gave up on that.
I am going to upgrade the alternator at the same time, to a 75, fingers crossed for me tomorrow, going to fit that and wire it all up then test it! If anyone has fitted a replacement upgraded alternator to their Beta engine, have you any tips? things to avoid?

If I had an engine in that state, I'd lift the whole thing out, overhaul it and repaint it. I'd also try to provide it with a dry environment.

+1. I had a bad seawater leak all over my 1GM10 at the end of last season and you would NOT believe how much damage it did. This winter was an engine out jobbie and I even went to the extent of removing the gearbox and replacing the seals. Cast Iron is pretty robust but anything aluminium needs a thorough clean and re-paint.

BTW, make sure your engine can swing a bigger alternator. I tried to fit a 50amp alternator to mine a couple of yeas ago (by mistake) and the engine wouldn't start.

The engine is mainly in the cabin, all that rust came from a leaking header tank which was spraying water through the pinholes in the welds. The welds eventually failed completely and I replaced the header tank. The new one didnt completely fit the tube stack, so that leaked too, onto the components you can see. All surface rust and it needs a good brush down and repainting. the original paint failed very quickly.
I have fitted the new starter motor and alternator and wired it all up, the starter battery wasnt up to starting it this morning, so thats on charge and I need to bleed the fuel system.
