Removal of Steering wheel

I Have a Jeaneu Merryfisher 535 and wish to replace the steering wheel. I have removed the large nut and try as I might the wheel will not budge. large amounts of WD40 have been ap <span style="color:blue"> </span> plied. Am I missing something? can any one help.

Is it on a taper perhaps, if so, can you pour a kettle of boiling water on the boss? might expand the boss enough to allow you to get it off.
 
Well, if its a taper / spline job like a car then a) grip firm & pull hard with a gentle but exaggerated rocking motion for 30 seconds or so, or then b) use a hub puller.
 
HI Had the same problem.....I put the centre nut back on until it was about a 1/4 inch from being tight, Then exerting as much pressure as I could, pulling the wheel off with one hand , I hit the nut with a hammer. No damage as the threads are protected by the nut, the wheel should be on a taper and a woodruff key.... This worked for me ... the wheel must have been on for sbout 30 years. took a couple of good bangs. It's called shock tactics.

I was having a similar problem when the chap next door lent me his 3 leg reversible gear puller.

Bought one from Halfords in November and have just put it together.... attached it to the wheel, works a treat.

I think it was about £16 and, if I take the wheel off every now and then, and grease it, I'll possibly never have to use the puller /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Not that graceful, but here's what you do.

Slacken nut off till only 2 turns remain, sit on the dash facing the stern, put legs behind wheel and push with as much pressure against wheel as you can manage, then either you or a trusted friend hit the end of the steering shaft with a large hammer and drift. Hey presto, one loosened wheel, and/or badly bruised bedroom furniture!
 
With a similar problem on a Carter 42 in 1995, the bosun at The Royal Irish in Dun Laoghaire showed us how to wind a thinnish rope between the wheel and the pedestal. As the winds went on, (by turning the wheel), they forced the wheel off... but the gear puller was much simpler, and quicker.
