Hi

can anyone advise me about how the remote tank operates. I have a Mercury Mariner 4HP outboard which has an internal tank, but a friend has given me a Quicksilver 15L remote tank. I have purchased the bayonet fitting for the tank and the pipe set up ( with priming bulb) and it all fits onto the outboard ok. Firstly when I come to use it I assume I just plug it in ( its a two pin type female connector) squeeze the primer bulb and pull the starter cord- but is there any special setting I need to make on the fuel on/off lever on the outboard and secondly does the tank need to be above the engine to keep the gravity flow or does it suck it through somehow?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Mike

My outboard did not have facility for a remote tank so I got it modified with a plug in fitting and a 2 way selector valve. As you already have the tank connection, I would assume that you have a remote/local/off selector valve not just an on/off. This has to be in the correct position.
It doesn't have to be above the engine, I think the motor has a fuel suction pump but you have to squeeze the bulb to prime it. You can feel when the bulb goes hard.

If the engine has the connector ready for a remote tank it will have an internal fuel pump ( prob integral with the carb on a Merc IIRC) and an extra filter for the remote tank connector.

Connect the remote tank, leave the tap for the internal tank shut, pump the bulb and then start as normal.

RTFM as they say ....... down load from Brunswick marine's download center if you have mislaid it. Not always easy to find the right one, but its there somewhere.

Sorry not got time this morning to read it for you......... will log in agian this evening if you have any queries

On our engine the fuel on off is set to off to select the remote tank. set in this position prime with bulb on remote fuel line and start as normal. I find our engine runs better if fuel is drawn by engine pulse pump rather than gravity/syphon and I have the remote tank lower than carburettor.

Suspect you have a problem there ( blocked filter in internal tank outlet ????) to sort out! Not checked but I think both feeds go through the pump>

The "pump" on smaller outboards with a remote tank fitting are the diaphram type. Over time these can become less flexible and even brittle - and can be fairly weak at drawing up fuel from a tank. Its usually easy to check the diaphram - four screws on the pump. If its old, it can be replaced, or sometimes revived if its been very dry and non-flexible,

Thanks very much for the information ghostlymoron my tank has just on/ off but have gleaned from VicS and TSB240 that it has to be in off position. VicS that link is extremely helpful and have downloaded the manual- much appreciated. Thanks for tip Dartmoor.

again great info and many thanks to all

It runs fine off internal tank.
If external tank is set on cockpit locker lid with base of tank slightly higher than engine top the engine starts running over rich. It is fine at wot but wont tickover without the occasional
throttle blip to clear.

Runs perfectly if remote can is at or below carb level. No line leaks. Not a problem with any of my other engines which are all remote fed only versions.

Its had me thinking for some time maybe a float valve needs some tlc?
