To avoid spilling oil everywhere, I want to move the oil filter on my Volvo D2-40. Any idea where I can get one, or how I can work out which automotive one I need.

That's a good idea on the VP 20xx / D1/2-xx series, the oil filter change is always a tad bit messy.

Just remember to mount the remote filter with filter down, sounds obvious but it's not always done. Also, space it off whatever you are mounting it to so that you can get a suitable size container around it to catch the drips.

It’s horizontal on the original fit, any reason to change that, other than avoiding mess when removing?

Nope, if you are happy with that it will work - and has the benefit of the oil not running down your hand when spinning it off! Obviously it is horizontal on the engine as that is the orientation of the drilling into the block, and it's simply cheaper to just tap directly into the oil gallery rather that have a filter head. You can thank the bean-counters for that one ;-)
