Someone left a pile of old mags in “the lounge” at Penarth marina
These two, 2012 and 2014 editions made for some enjoyable reading
The used boats seem a tad pricey though! ?

I miss MBM. I have heaps of back issues to 2005 and enjoy picking one up at random.
MBY tries to be all things to all boaters and IMO doesn’t quite pull it off.

The old magazine was streets ahead of others produced around the world, proper research/comparisons done and articulated in an excellent format.
Other publications were often made up of advertorials with “researched info” being spoon fed from sponsored company’s, along with lame, condescending and unrealistic content to puff up the article in an attempt to sell the lifestyle to readers.

I really do miss MBM and as already said, MBY isn’t quite the same. Not criticising them because, to be fair, they have tried to bridge the gap and I have kept up my subscription but it is inherently difficult to be all things to all people.

.

We went a trail boat rally to Milford haven , I still have the copy with a photo of us , a great mag .

Ah yes, I remember the cruises in company well. The one I remember most fondly was London on Water. Roger & Hazel Stagg and Barbara and I cruised over from Portsmouth meeting up with Piers in Dieppe? I've still got the photo you took of Falken off the Shivering Sands Forts. Your signoff on VHF made me smile then and still does now. Thank you for cruising with us and have a safe onwards journey.

Embarrassingly, I have kept pretty much every copy of MBM and MBY since 1991 just after I started motorboating. My SWMBO chucked them out of the house several years ago along with loads of boat brochures so I had 2 cupboards built into my new office to house them

Yes I miss the MBM cruises in company too. We cut our boating teeth with MBM doing our first cross Channel trip with them and following up with many cruises to places like the Scillies, Holland and Paris

I was staff on a few. Paris (when a chunk got taken taken out of Play D’eau stern capping in a lock by the anchor of the boat behind), West Country Cruise (Recsued a S23 that wouldn’t restart..... I think it was won for a year as a prize or something) and Normandy (When we rescued a Levi Corsair from sinking.....Piers Involved in that too!?) always eventful but what a great scheme it was.

still my best boating memories by far.

Still in touch with Neale and Claire. Last I heard Commander Gregory moved to the Isle of Wight

It will bring back memories of the championship , oh no thats the future .

Learned so much from Commodore Gregory. One of the first questions he asked me on my first C in C in our Princess V39 was, 'which will affect you more when you cast off today? The wind or the tide?'

Can you remember the radio call? 'Play d'eau, when do I ask for help?' 'What's wrong,' I replied. 'Well, I'm sitting in the cockpit and the water's already up to my knees and it's still coming in...'

I know most publications are online now rather than printed. But how much does your average magazine cost now? I think the last one I bought was like for £5.

Same with aviation magazines.

Does anyone really prefer digital to paper? I think publishers have jumped the gun and will have to reintroduce paper copies in the not too distant future.

I am now so used to digital publications, that when I read a paper one I often try to click on a link or pinch to zoom an image

The other thing is cost. £5.50 for an MBY or free for a digital mobo mag. I know they are not the same, and I still get both, but if one were going to be dropped I know which one it would be. I don't think the trend is reversible, it's only going one way I'm afraid. The cost of paper publishing would certainly have contributed to the demise of MBM.

I to have all copies from the early ninties to the last one. They are a great source of info, especially reviews of then new boats that I might be buying second hand now.
The only problem is finding them. Some issues had indexes but don't know which ones. It would be great to have an index of boat reports and destinations if nothing else.
I wonder if anyone has done this?
