Hi folks,
I have 2 short lengths of Vetus exhaust hose between my elbow and muffler box, each about 5 inches with a stainless reducer / joiner in between.
As they are very old i plan to replace them and rather than the vetus old rubber hose which can go up to 100deg I see that reinforced silicon hose like the one here could be an option and it is good for up to 130deg

Any reason I should not use it instead of the older type traditional Vetus stuff?

Has anyone else done the same?
Thanks

I have used it but not for exhaust. However, it is usually polyester fibre reinforced which is good for pressure but will not keep it in shape round a bend. For that you will need the spiral wire reinforced type. For your short runs which i assume are straight it appears to be a good choice.

The latest exhaust hose is nothing like the old stiff hose. Use the proper hose for the job, although finding two short lengths like that may be a bit of a challenge.

ASAP listed off-cuts of exhaust hose from roll ends but the website is currently down at the moment. You can however still phone them and see if they have any available. If you want to go down the silicon hose route ebay is a good source and there are silicon reducers available but probably not long enough for your application.

What diameter silicone hose are you looking for? I used some on my exhaust installation without any issues, but no tight bends on gentle curves. Didn't use the spiral reinforced, just the normal polyester braided. I have some spare short lengths of it if you let me know what size/length you need.

Two years ago I installed a used 8KW Diesel genset on our boat. I purchased an oversize Halyard exhaust silencer, it had 75mm inlets and I needed 50mm.

High quality Motorsport 75/50mm sillicone stepdown adaptors for torbo intercoolers did the job.

The genset is used daily when we are onboard without shore power. I inspected both adaptors Saturday, just like new.
I used ASAP's fibreglass exhaust joining tube to connect.

I would have no worries about using sillicone hose unless wire reinforcing was required.

I'm wondering why you feel you need 130' rated hose instead of 100'.

If your exhaust elbow water injector is working correctly the temp it deals with cannot be over 100' - indeed will be considerably less so why would you want hose to go to 130?
If the exhaust temp is over 100' I suggest you have a major problem and it needs to be solved - and using high temp hose isn't addressing this.

No offense intended - but I wonder if this question isn't yet another manifestation of assuming that over-specced materials are in some undefined - assumed - way somehow "better" than more mundane ones that are perfectly capable of doing the job.
eg Dyneema cordage or Kevlar sails on a cruising boat. It's a common enough scenario.

Thanks for the informative responses folks. I don't need it to go to 130. I was simply pointing out the difference versus the traditional Vetus type product and the silicon products. My exhaust is usually around 30.
My main problem is getting the short lengths, Vetus is usually by the meter here where as the Silicon ones are available in shorter lengths.
My current 2 lengths of the old hose are 1 x ID 60mm length 140mm & 1 x ID 75 l 110mm. These were joined with a stainless reducer/ Mikalor fasteners.

You might even be able to get a single silicon hose that is stepped, so you don't have to use the stainless joiner/adaptor either - 2 less joins to worry about.

yes I see that is an option but it is leaving me a bit short to the muffler so I will get a "burp" hose of the same dimension and join it with a home made glass, epoxy tube.

Sorry but the silicone I have is 45mm diameter, too small for your needs.
Take a look on Ebay as Auto Silicone Hoses (ASH) do short lengths and steps.
