registration???

I have recently looked at a motorboat in ireland that was for sale it had a "registration" no. on it,beside boat name,eg sarah (A 971) what does this mean?makes me believe it originated in the uk,any advice greatly recieved.Thanks in advance.

You don't say what kind of boat it is but that could be a Broads authority number.
