Re: Bit like the Sus Laws. Shiney leave it alone Scruffy and were going to take a loo

but never actually ask for proof that the insurance is actually in place. .

Ours does, have to include a copy of insurance with the contract. Mind you ours has a crane too...

Technically Bray Marina still have a crane, they just don't have anyone willing to operate it...

....or possibly the required paperwork regards operator and/or crane has timed out ?

Re: Bit like the Sus Laws. Shiney leave it alone Scruffy and were going to take a loo

The story I've been told is that the crane at Bray is old,was second hand when it arrived, used to be in a yard at Taplow in the 90's when they sold boats from a piece of land next to the sea scouts. It needs money spent on it,when it breaks down it needs time and money.Former operators can have an easier, more profitable life simply walking away from it.

Re: Bit like the Sus Laws. Shiney leave it alone Scruffy and were going to take a loo

Thing is, whatever the reason, folks are paying £5K per year supposedly for facilities that they don't have. MDL needs a rocket up its jacksie

Re: Bit like the Sus Laws. Shiney leave it alone Scruffy and were going to take a loo

From memory the ashore storage at Bray appeared to be home to very few fixer uppers, number of boats using the crane for repair/polishing or A/F would be a small fraction of the boats in the marina.
With no need for any annual A/F haul out and only the odd emergency lift, doubt the crane was returning a decent income for MDL and was probably only vital to independant repair concessions or franchises active on the site.

I would have thought most marinas would be reluctant to get involved without some financial benefit to themselves. Much the same as most (all?) will say that it is a requirement for boats kept in their marina to have insurance but never actually ask for proof that the insurance is actually in place. If they make it a policy to check on insurance and then miss a boat that subsequently goes bang and destroys a neighbouring boat, they could find themselves in hot water, better to just make the requirement part of their T's & C's and then keep the oneness fully on the boat owner to abide by said T & C's.

Ours ask for proof of licence, BSC and insurance every year from berth holders. It is also in the terms and conditions that they must be held and valid for the period of the berthing agreement.

When a boat went up in flames last March on the fuel berth it was a visiting boat and had no insurance. Which has been of no help to the marina or the new owners of the other boat which was also written off!

There are currently around 60-70 boats out on the hardstanding, less than 10% are old scrappers. This is a reduced number compared to previous years.

The real reasons the crane service was discontinued is that it took too many man hours to lift and store each boat (3 people each time) and adding the cost of maintaining the crane (Which just passed it's safety tests by the way) made it financially unworkable, compared to simply operating as on-site engineers.

fully understandable, so where does anybody go for lift out....my previous record indicates that I may well need the service sooner or later. ?

I guess the insurers for the marina and for the other boat dealt with the damage . I wonder if the insurers are seeking a recovery from the idiot who had no insurance.

Curiously we are not asked by the marina for proof of insurance .
I would not dare risk being uninsured.

MDL have a cracking deal at Penton for Bray bertholders. It's cheaper than it ever was. Good for the time being while they sort something out.

Re: Bit like the Sus Laws. Shiney leave it alone Scruffy and were going to take a loo

It may be a cracking deal but if I wanted the boat at Penton Hook thats where I'd moor it, not at (the much nicer) Bray.

Getting the boat to PH for us means the hassle of bringing 2 cars down to sort out the delivery trip, an extra 20 minutes on the journey (each way) whenever we want to go work on the boat and the fact that the boat isn't then available as a base for clubhouse activities.

PH might be ok as a short term solution but MDL better have a better option planned for the long term!
