Registering to a UK company on the SSR?

my feel on the situation it is they are quire happy taking your dosh without too many questions being asked, would be interesting to now how many boats are registered on the ssr must be thousands in the Med alone.....

My gut feel is he tried to use his real "foreign" address and it picked him up at that point.

Not the case. He used a friend's UK address.

I know of one case in 2017, where a non-resident UK citizen applied for new SSR registration after buying a UK SSR reg.yacht, paid the fee (which you have to do with the application), and soon thereafter a letter was received at the UK (family) address which he had used asking for a utility bill in the applicant's name.
