Registering AIS

Having just fitted an AIS transceiver I have been "reminded" by the MCA reply to a letter in PBO that I need to register it.

Is this simply a matter of updating the ship's Ofcom license to include the AIS transmitter (and possibly my CG66 form), or is there something else which must be done as well?

All I did was obtain an MSSI number / licence from Ofcom online (or whatever they are called) for my DSC VHF radio and input the same number into the AIS transceiver. As far as I am aware, that's it!

If your AIS is a transmit rather than receive only, it should be added to the Ship's Radio License.

Not sure what that's all about but as I already had my AIS before I applied for the VHF licence I don't intend to amend the existing licence. I would have included it when I filled in the form for the VHF.

I've updated the licence 3-4 times now to add handheld VHF, EPIRB, AIS transceiver and update emergency contact details. It's been very easy to do each time and then I printed out a copy of the new document to keep with boat's documentation.

Very easy if already registered and the current link is https://services.ofcom.org.uk. I think that you can also register online via the same link but can't comment on the process as I registered years ago.

Thanks for the reminder and link - have just gone in and added the AIS and Radar plus updated my Shore Contacts details ( brother ) as he moved house last year

Now to update the CG66 ....

I had totally forgotten to add my AIS transponder when I upgraded from receiver-only in early 2014.

An easy and painless on-line access and pdf printout.

You are supposed to have all the ships radio transmitting equipment on the ships radio licence. The transceiver is of course a transmitter so ye, log on on line and add it to the licence. Costs nothing to do so and helps them monitor you wherever you are going. But then thats one reason for having a transmitter. Be a naughty boy in a seperation zone and they will catch you. :encouragement:
