Refurbishment costs at 10years

Well I may look again at buying new if I can buy a 34ft Bavaria, ready to go for under 100 grand.

You can - just about, if you don't load it up with everything. Slight trepidation in saying this as prices are likely to jump because of the £ drop.

However, last year my fully loaded 33 came in at just over £100k., but I could have had an Easy 9.7 (stripped out version) for about £65K. However that is now discontinued as they proved very hard to sell. Few new boat buyers seem to want a very basic boat. Not surprising when you see what you can buy for £65k in the second hand market.

Interesting to hear. Wonder how the Hanse Variantas are doing. Assumed they would be equally difficult to sell as even in the adverts they look like boats which are half finished.

Exactly the same - very few sales and not being promoted in this market. The Easy 9.7 i was considering took nearly a year to sell. Was, however useful in getting people looking and upselling to the "proper" version.

My experience of buying new and talking to the other owners who have done the same suggests there are different motivations for buying new, at least for private buyers. Many of the buyers are buying their "last boat" and choose new because they know exactly what they want and are expecting several years of trouble free boating - avoiding the scenario posed in this thread. Once you have made the decision to commit that amount of money it makes sense to have the extras you value so you get full use out of them for the time you own the boat.

The person who buys the boat 10 years later is essentially buying the unused part of the boat's life which inevitably means some bits need replacing. That is why the price will be typically half the original cost. No different from cars except the timescales for depreciation are longer.

Whilst his comment would be true for brokerage boats, owners marketing their boats privately are often much less aware of reality.

True - but I think in the age of the Internet, it's not such an issue to be more switched on. WHilst you may not have latest selling prices or the experience of say John, it's really not hard to look at models online, compare specs and conditions with your own boat and at least come up with an asking price in line with everyone else.

Where the difficulties lie of course is in rare boats.

My August YM gives the price of the Bavaria 34, I guess "as tested" as: £131,851.

It had spinnaker gear and teak ish deck but no innovations like furling main or bow thruster.

I contacted my insurers after ten years about the standing rigging and was told that they were happy for twenty years. I had it checked anyway and have relaxed in the knowledge that rigging is supposed to be most likely to fail in its first year. Having done 17 seasons, many of the items have been dealt with, including gaiter, exhaust elbow, water pump, sails and antifouling, so anyone whingeing about safety if I choose to sell is likely to get short shrift. Buying secondhand is always likely to lead to expenses, which is why the prices reflect that.
That is a good post

That is a twin aft cabin, twin wheel boat and had full electronics, autopilot, upgraded sails etc. Furling main is only £1k and bow thruster £3.5k (less than teak effect decks!)

There is also a 34 single aft cabin, single wheel version which is essentially the same boat that is nearly £15k cheaper spec for spec. It is quite possible to get a reasonably equipped example for close to £100k. For a UK buyer this version (which is essentially the same as my 33) is arguably a better boat and better value.
