Hi I'm in the process of buying a rib the problem is that the mooring/marina I use have no refuelling facilities so I was just wondering have you seen any alternatives/gadgets other than having to haul around heavy jerry cans full of petrol thanks....

Not sure what the legalities of filling it up at a roadside fuel station are but I imagine you may encounter problems.

Indeed. Brigantia (who works in a petrol station) usually trots out the rules for us at this point.

I think it would hinge on whether your tank on wheels could be said to be a "dedicated tank for portable equipment, manufactured for the purpose". If not, there is a limit of 20 litres and I think that has to be into a metal can. Of course you're also subject to the whims, intelligence, and observation skills of the random person behind the till who enables the pump.

Tesco, Hamble. Middle of the night, pay at pump. Sorted ;)

Sorry to be pedantic, but its Bursledon. We don't have the likes of Tesco in Hamble you know.

My apologies, I should have known really, Hamble Tesco would never leave its fenders down

13th season of filling up from jerry cans; what a PITA. I'm sure the 20 litre jerry cans are getting heavier year on year. The marina say they can't provide petrol due to the insurance being higher and environmental reasons ( a lie, as petrol spills probably affect the marine environment less as petrol evaporate much quicker than diesel !!!)

I use a syphon pump from Machine Matr, the bigger one, not the weedy one.; it transfers 20 litres very quickly indeed , quicker than the local petrol station pumps fill the Jerry can in the first place. The first one lasted 8 years.

I've got 2 of Roche's 53 litre ones - getting a bit too heavy for me to lift into car so I fill them whilst they overhang the tailgate.
Are now 4-5 yrs old and one of the wheels has become very stiff, otherwise quality is good. The only doubt about them is the fact that the pump action is quite tiring on the wrist/hand - luckily we can use gravity rather than the pump, though that slows down the flow.
Due to the weight problem I may well revert to 20-25 litre cans.

It is getting harder and harder to fill up tanks with petrol at petrol stations. For several years I have filled up 25 containers in the boot of my car, being discrete and aware of the 5L rule for containers. More recently the garage I normally use insisted the container had to be on the floor when filled and no bigger than 5 litres. Having outlined my understanding of the law that "dedicated fuel tanks for portable appliances" were exemt from the 5l rule the garage people said yes that is correct in law but our company policy is 5l only and on the floor whilst filling. Went then to an Asda petrol outlet and managed to fill 2x25 litre tanks but that was only because the fuel kiosk attendant had not noticed that after putting a little fuel in the car I switched to filling my fuel tanks. It seems they have standing instructions to watch for people opening the boot and to not switch on the pump if people are trying to fill containers. I think this is just going to get more and more difficult as time goes by. I paid about £1.60 a litre for regular unleaded at Portland Marina recently! Waterside petrol is a problem in some parts of the country eg in Wales you would have to go from Pwthelli (sorry never could spell it) to Milford Haven to get petrol, about 80/90 miles and then another 50 to Swansea or Holyhead or Conwy. It is probably worse in other areas.

Hi could you give me the link/name of the syphon please?

I hit the "limit" issue today.. Tried to fill two 10L cans.. I have filled them a few times at this garage but today the pump stopped and they said over the PA that there was a 10L limit.. Looks like I am going to have to be a little more "stealthy" or work out what I need to do to allow more than 10L..

If I had a 20L metal cans would that allow me to get past the limit?

I have never had a problem, I usually arrive at the petrol station on my bike with 2 containers in each panier and two on the rack, that is 30l, is this not allowed?

We are amongst other things a independent shell fuels retailer - we are a very busy site and sell circa 10m litres a year - many of our commercial customers are tree surgeons and we are very close to 2 golf course queenwood & foxhills all fill 10l Jerry cans which are located in pickup tailgates. All fine and legal. However if we spotted you on a bike filling containers in paniers we would not serve you on the basis that is a common trick for folks who have no intention of paying for their fuel to operate. However I would add if you came into the shop and explained what you were intending to do it would be down to the member of staff to decide whether to serve you or not, which I dare say they would as they are more concerned with runners than anything else. I would also add that although what you are doing is not illegal if stopped by the police it would be upto the officer if he or she considered it a dangerous load or may be hazardous.

I use 2 25ltr Plastimo outboard tanks. Once had the bod come out of the kiosk to look but everything was OK as they even have fuel quantity gauges and QD valves on stack pipes built into the top. No misunderstanding as to what constitutes a fuel tank then.
