I currently have a Frigoboat bimetallic thermostat fitted to a 12V refrigerator cooling a small cold box. The box is about 40 litres and is top-loading with the current mechanical thermostat attached to the evaporator plate.

I am considering fitting a digital thermostat that allows me to set a control temperature. It appears that the thermostat switches the compressor off when the temperature reaches the control point and turns the compressor on when the temperature reaches 2 degrees C above the control temperature.

Where is the best place to position the new digital thermostat sensor? Would there be any benefit in having both thermostats operating?

Use only the digital one and place it away from the cooling plate about half way down. Also you often have defrost function in digital ones that you may want to turn off.
