Another quandry, regarding the refurb of my slightly-tired Cutlass 27, for which I again invite opinion....

I've removed to my workshop the existing Barlow 19 non-selftailing sheet winches from their cockpit side mountings, and stripped them down for cleaning. The externals are, after 30 years, not pristine. The internals, however, are..... They've had a gentle life.

I like the functionality of 'self-tailing' and, while I've bought new 'Wincher' units to fit the Barlows - which I know work well - I have in my loft 2 pairs of pristine, unused and still boxed Lewmar AST 43s. So I am encouraged to retrofit a couple of these big 43s.

Except, they seem rather OTT for a 27', 3-ton wee boat. See pic...

A 'trial fit' shows they'd overlap the coaming by close to an inch, so tailored s/s mountings would be needed. On a boat where most of the sheet and halyard loads can be hand-hauled, they still seem rather 'overkill' and perhaps faintly ridiculous. Or am I wholly wrong...?

What does the team think?

Yes, you are wholly wrong, overkill by far, but you know this. Best to keep these winches as an asset for a future project or to sell on to fund something for this one.

Sell the 43s & buy 30STs

sell them on ebay and buy smaller ones.

these 43s on 27ft boat have too much power, potential to break something if used wrongly.

I agree, I have 30STs on a 27 footer and although when hard pressed I would happily go up a size, but they are just the right size to remind me it's time to reef that ludicously large foresail!

Rob.

I've got standard Lewmar 40's on my 28 footer because I got them second hand and cheap. If I had a set of 43ST's in the loft I'd fit them like a shot. As long as I could fit the bolt pattern onto the coamings I wouldn't worry about the slight overhang. If you could do a deal to swap them for some new 30STs that may be a better option but otherwise use them.

Hmmm. A pair of Lewmar EVO 2-speed ast30s would set me back around £1000....

I have a pair of Antal 32s that have been my coachroof winches for 7 years, and just serviced.

I am in the market for a pair of AST43s, and would love to dicker a mutually convenient solution. Trouble is, I have just finished this seasons upgrades and refubishments, so would not want to do this job until the end of the season.

Isn't it always the way...? Do bear in mind I have TWO pairs of these things - once intended for a long-stalled 'big project' - and a pair of new Lewmar 8s, as well. There are boaty things in my bulked-out loft I haven't seen for years.... or remembered!

I shall bookmark for:
a)the end of the season
b) when I have money.

:o

My two winches worth :
Now that FC has relocated one pair..
The others , well. I swapped out 30s for 40s on my last boat and went racing ( and shorthanded cruising) . Moving a stantion in the process to plonk em where I wanted them( having raced a sister ship ).

All agreed, 40 was the correct size . Boat 26ft 3t tho I added two feet n stuff

On my wee 28' trapper 500 I replaced the non tailing Lewmar 30's with some 40 selfers, my lovely wee crew still needs a bit of extra help to crank in the No.1 & No.2 in a breeze. She smiles when I suggest we just have the 'little jib' for a leisurley sail. 43's are a bit ott but 30's are marginal if your crew are not all beefy.
