I drained my water jacket on my md1 overwinter. Do I need to refill it before running the engine? And if so, how?

Hi.
We used to drain ours after each trip .
On restarting,open seacock, having closed block tap and start.
The jabsco would pump thro' after a while!
We have now retired the old lump due to general overall fatigue .
Have complete engine and gear box available if any one interested
