My boat has a tailor-made compartment to hold two refillable stainless steel gas bottles, all fitted by the previous owner when the boat was in Australia. Unfortunately the bottles have a diameter of 220mm, a lot less than any standard calorgas bottles, which don't therefore fit into the compartment. I'm having trouble finding an adaptor to enable me to get the bottles filled (they have a standard UK regulator which I had fitted during the last gas check) - can anyone give me any advice on this, either as to where I can get them refilled on the south coast or where I can buy an adaptor? The only alternative, other than ripping out and replacing the compartment, seems to be to use the largest of the Camping Gaz bottles which I could stack one on top of the other, thereby storing 4 bottles, but this is a pretty expensive option. Thanks for any advice, Phil

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. BTW these are purpose built stainless steel tanks, I'm not trying to refill Camping Gas tanks like the guy on one of the threads. Regarding the tanks, does anyone know where I can get them pressure tested as they're over 10 years old. Cheers.

Will anyone fill non-standard bottles in this country? I was under the impression that the various suppliers would only fill their own bottles. Alternatively, can you fill at a garage?

If they need pressure testing and you need special adaptors it may be best to just bite the bullet and fit a bigger locker. A few bits of ply, some epoxy and Bob's the proverbial.

A friend of ours refills his Calor cylinders at a local garage. He tells me that he did need to ask around a bit before he found a filling station that was prepared to allow it, but he now does it completely openly.

It is officially illegal to refill stand-alone bottles on garage forecourts but I know people who put their bottles in the back of a van and get away with it. Gaslow sell all the fittings, probably others do also.

I would be looking at the practicality of altering the gas locker. If you do that, you can get gas anywhere (in the UK) without any hassle. If you do design and make a new locker, remember to make space for a bubble tester, (unlike mine):(
