i have a hunter 376 and wanted to install a 3rd (slab) reef on it for when in gets a bit windy. does anyone think an 8mm braid on braid (1900kg breaking load) is sufficient for the tricing line or should i go for the 10 mm (2300kg) option. I was thinking of keeping down on friction with the skinnier line.
I was tempted also by english braids; as they seem quite affordable. Does anyone have any opinion or advice on the matter?

The question of chafe when the reef is in use concerns me. If it is like mine the line runs through the eyelet of the clew which presents quite a sharp edge to the rope. Now it may be OK it not used often but the heavier rope would provide more resistance to chafe. (maybe) It does take the load of the mainsheet pulling on the leach of the sail. You may be able to alleviate the chafe if you can double up with wraps of rope from the clew reef point around the boom but this may be difficult/dangerous to fit if you really need the reef. good luck olewill

I have just replaced all my 10 mm reefing pennants with 8 mm Dyneema. Friction has been reduced in my in-mast reefing arrangement, which was not excessive before but has benefited from the change. Strength of the 10 mm braid on braid and 8 mm Dyneema are similar.

I'm in the process of replacing my 10mm with 8mm. It is not so easy to handle if you're trying to get a good haul on it but if you have that much resistance then either there is to much wind in the sail or something is jammed and needs freeing off. If needs be I will experiment with having small blocks or sheaves instead of cringles.

Mind you, the boats only a 29 footer.
