Reed\'s Small Craft Almanac

Does the team think that the small craft Almanac is a substitute for the channel Almanac? It looks a lot handier to keep on the boat, but does it have standard port tide heights, tidal charts, chartlets of marinas/ports, contact phone nos and call signs like the channel one? Does it cover the same area?I can't find anything on the contents on the Internet, does anyone have one?
Many thanks

Re: Reed\'s Small Craft Almanac

I was given the 2008 Small Craft Almanac but have not had the opportunity to use it yet. I can answer some of your questions about content.

It includes what looks to me like pretty comprehensive tidal information including tidal stream charts, tide tables and tidal curves. They also cover, less comprehensively, the West Europe coast including Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar.

It does not include chartlets of marinas/ports but does have contact details including VHF channels for contacting them and phone numbers. It also includes details of lights, buoys and waypoints as well as distance tables. The area covered is the British Isles including Eire and the West Coast of Europe from Denmark to Gibraltar.

There is information about navigation, weather, communications, safety and tides as the broad headings. Whether there are significant omissions I cannot tell but having recently completed my VHF certificate I have noticed that, apart from coastguards', there are no MMSI numbers given.

Hope this helps you make up your mind.

Re: Reed\'s Small Craft Almanac

thanks guys - I did wonder if I would get a response on this as I posted it originally on the mobo forum with no replies. This suprised me as I always saw the almanac as the bible, something I would not do a passage without.
I will try the cmall craft version this year and see how I get on.

Re: Reed\'s Small Craft Almanac

SWMBO buys me the small almanac every year as I think it is good value. It's a nice stocking filler at Xmas. I buy a large almanac periodically but the most used is the Small one. It seems to hold all the relevent details (especially the channel tidal flow charts) I require and as I sometimes like to have the info at hand in the cockpit as I sail singlehanded most of the time it means I am not lugging a big one about.
