I've just inherited a Reeds zig zag sailmaking sewing machine. The base is a
bit tatty but the machine is nigh on pristine. It is hand operated but also
has the motor and pedal.

I have heard that they may still be popular. Does anyone have any idea what it might be worth
these days and where I might sell it (other than on here of course!)?

Many thanks,
Rob

Sorry, can't help with the value, but there will be plenty of cruisiers from these forums that would most probably be very interested in it.

An old hand-operated Singer usually goes for between £50 - £100 and they are also sought after by sailors.

Welcome to the forum by the way and if you do decide to sell it, please send me a PM (private message - click on my name and at the bottom section you will see a button that says "Send Private Message). Thanks

Try selling it on E-bay. The last one went for a lot more than my £250 bid! It will depend on the model but they all generally do the same job. Best of luck.

[/ QUOTE ]Jeez, did you get ripped off or what? £30 MAX, not a penny more or £5 at the local church fete. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cliff's right there - I got 5 for free at the local dump. Reeds, on the other hand, I sold on Ebay 3? years ago for err something under £300.

Or you might decide to keep it.

I'll try that then - wasn't sure if Ebay is the right forom!

Thanks all for your help - and the £40 bid but sorry, not now!

When I list it I'll post the item number on here as there seems to be a bit of interest.

Funny you did not think of Ebay yourself as I see you not new there having done over 180 transactions or was this post just to drum up interest ?

Not at all - I had no idea what it was worth. Didn't want to risk selling it for a song, but also didn't want to mess it up by setting a stupid reserve. Also I wasn't sure if Ebay was right for it. I know from experience that not everything sells well. I just spent weeks trying to sell a lovely welsh dresser and couldn't get it to go over £25, but sold an exercise machine for nigh on £200!

Not everyone looks at ebay but the replies I got put my mind at rest that I'll get enough interest in this there to make it worthwhile.

Bider 1 is a bit of a berk biding against him self by the looks of it or was there a reserve he was determined to match. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Paste from ebay bider list page.

Bidder one may have been encouraged to up his or her bid by Ebay's little trick of informing the highest bidder that he is close to being outbid if either the next highest, or the reserve, is just below his bid. One could surmise therefore that: either the reserve was 100 GBP and Bidder one was persuaded to up her bid by this device; or the reserve was 150 GBP and Bidder one decided to up her first bid (at 101 GBP) because the first was rejected as being below the reserve. I think the latter is more likely.

The reserve was £150 - given the feedback I had received here I didn't want to sell it outside this forum for any less. If no-one on Ebay had been prepared to go that far I would rather have offered it on here in the hope it would go to a genuine boatie!

OK, seeing as I was the first to ask for it, I will give you £150-00 and collect it in the UK at the end of May/early June.

That's fine - it's yours if it doesn't exceed £150 as you were first. You'll understand if it goes up I want to let the bidding run though....
