I'm advised - by Bloomsbury - that they'll sell me a copy in August if I'm willing to part with about £31. I haven't bought a fresh copy for some years, so am musing over the value-for-money.

And... I'm asked to choose between the 'softback' edition, and the 'loose leaf' one. Any views on these options?

Oh, and if I have money to throw away, there's also an online edition available at £20 extra cost.

If you're not planning to go further than Brittany, then the Reeds Channel Almanac is quite a bit cheaper, smaller and ring-bound so lies flat.

Definitely the looseleaf version. It opens flat and is much easier to use as a result.

That's the one in a ring binder - not seen it in person, but presumably it's a bit larger than the bound book?

I just get the Channel version each year as it more than covers our cruising area.

Pete

I had the one in a ring binder but let it get a bit out of date, rather than buying the updates. I just bought a new 2016 one and mistakenly ordered the paperback version. Pages are the same size in both but the ring binder version was better because it opens flatter and you can take a page or two out.

I have the ring binder version. It's a big book so a bit difficult to manipulate but an advantage is that you can extract pages that you need for a trip and remove pages for areas unlikely to be visited.
You should also arm yourself with a pack of ring hole reinforcers if you plan to keep it a few years.

I've got the newest one on the boat, 2014 IIRC, and a 2007 at home. I've got good offline tides/currents software so I do nor miss the tables.
I got hustled into buying an online offering that came with the almanac. £15 'buy now! etc.' promised a passage planner and more. Useless, I logged on twice.

I went mad and updated my 2010 Reeds last year for a cruise from Brittany to the Clyde. Wish I hadn't bothered. Almost every entry was outdated or deficient. I can get a tide table for £1.50. Reeds is shamed by Bloc Atlantique, though not much use for UK.

The 3-ring binder problem. It's the same with PADI paperwork, all punched from the much superior 3-hole punch, standard in the US.

About 10 years ago I bought about 50 ring punches from Office Depot, had to upgrade my return flight to Premium Economy to get the extra weight allowance, then sold the lot at just enough profit to pay for the upgrade. Result!

why is a 3 hole punch much superior to a 4 hole punch (or paper drill), which has 33% more gripping power ?

Anyone remember when they changed the hole spacing of the loose-leaf almanac, meaning it wouldn't fit in the expensive binders people had already bought?

If they can provide you with a copy in August, it's probably more or less on its way to the printers now. Are you sure it's the 2017 edition?;)

No, I can't be sure until I see it - but that's what's advertised.

Unlike Amazon, who will still sell you - if you're daft enough - a pristine 2016, and even a 2015 almanac.

Mr Bilbo, What would you think is an appropriate price?

Where do you get the special paper size to print out the updated pages? If they produced an A4 version that fitted a four hole binder that would be "really useful", as the Fat Controller from Thomas the Tank Engine would say.
