Given the annual cost of charts etc and other 'must have' publications , I am thinking of buying the large Reeds Almanac every other year instead of annually, whilst it is an excellent publication, I'm sure that the chartlet and tidal data can be obtained elsewhere.

Anybody got any similar views?

Many thanks

David

Well, I can't speak for the opposition, but I do have a (minor) hand in the Cruising Association almanac and can commend it with confidence. It is put together each year by a number of practicing sailors for like minded folks and slanted to answer the practical questions that face us all. We try to keep it uncluttered from rarely used data and every word is reviewed annually for relevance and reliability, with updates.

Yes, tide tables can be purchased for somewhat less, but there the comparison ends: for best preparation an almanac such as ours makes a valuable contribution to sailing enjoyment and a happy landfall.

Do check it out.

I think its a must, I travel around the UK and need the information. I buy the Reeds Almanac looseleaf version, I also have anually Browns (comercial Almanac).

I think it depends on where you sail and how far, if your only sailing locally then one almanac will last a lifetime, if you sail locally and slightly further afield for holidays then maybe every other year or two, if you sit in the marina and only go out for a race or out for an hour or so then don't bother.

Tide times are usually produced locally, so if you don't go far theres no need for an almanac.

We still have the CA almanac from before they made it annual and put tide tables inside it....which in my opinion was a much better (and cheaper) solution.

When planning I find it much easier to have tide tables open on one page in front of me, AND the info for the passage or harbour entry also in front of me at the same time.

The tide tables were also a decent size, and quick to find the pages we needed.

Even using post-it bookmarks on Dover, Portsmouth and Cherbourg it's never quite as quick or easy to find the port when you want to with a traditional almanac

PBO Reeds Small Craft Almanac discrepancy

Last several years I have been buying the PBO Reeds Small Craft Almanac. Nice convenient size, and done the job well so far.
Just received the 2012 copy, and this copy does not do what it says on the content summary.
In the past it has covered tides, etc, all the way down to Gibralter, well, not this year, only to Gironde in South Brittany. Checked various places (and ISDN is confirmed correct in case of another version lurking around) and seems to be a "copy/paste" description from previous years looks like, everywhere I have looked. So if this is important to you, as it is to me, you will be disappointed. Mine is on its way back to Amazon.
Not sure I will bother anymore with one from some of the comments I see here.....

Yes.

I use Reeve-Fowkes for the Channel, which is valid forever if you have a copy of Cherbourg tables. These can often be downloaded for free.

Any old Reeds will cover the rest if you have a Dover tide table.

I tend to buy Reeds about every 5 years, or so.

I like the Reeve -Fowkes books. I cut the books to pieces and laminated each page so a Chinagraph wax pencil can be used on them.
