A flattening reef can work very well. The important thing is the positioning of the fastenings on the boom. When it is applied the reefing eye should be virtually hard on the boom and new foot should stretched but not too tightly. This still gives some curvature to the sail. The sail effectively becomes loose footed. I have found it good when close reaching with the spinny up in stronger winds. With the end of the boom higher there is a greater margin for errors when things go a bit pear shaped.
