It was news to me that some were tapered!Well I live and learn. Every days a school day.
Our Edson wheel will only fit one way round due to the taper. Yours will fit either way round.
And yes - you can fit our wheel either way round. I replaced the original nut with a knurled nut that Edson supply as an optional replacement when I stripped and serviced the whole system. It means that we can take the wheel off to make more room in the cockpit for lounging around/entertaining. (I sometimes get worried and paranoid about the wheel somehow getting kicked/bodged/knocked overboard when its left loafing on the aft deck and end up tying it to the boat.)
The wheel lock is from a knob on the side of the pedestal and tightens a pair of brake type shoes onto the wheel shaft. I had to replace these a couple of years ago as the steering lock was becoming ineffective.
I had to renew the cables and covers (ours is a 'pull-pull' system with a chain over a chain wheel on the steering wheel shaft with cables to a quadrant on the rudder stock when we first bought the boat. The old cable 'covers' or sheathes' had broken down inside and made the steering stiff. On ours there are grease cups half way along the cable sheathes, and I filled and greased them only a couple of weeks ago.
One thing of note is that Andy of Yachtparts in Plymouth sourced all the Edson parts for me very quickly. I was amazed that every part to my twenty something year old system was still available. No connection with Yachtparts - just a satisfied customer.
Looking at the parts diagram it appears that if you have a front operated wheel brake you get a tapered wheel mount and if its side operated, you get a parallel wheel mount.
