You are looking increasingly daft and rather chippy, do you seriously expect the courts to find Magistrates who have worked in a particular industry to try each case? It'll be pushing it to locate magisterial lorry drivers to try HGV related traffic cases for starters.

Thank you for a succinct explanation. IIRC the judge owned a Bavaria on the South coast. He certainly should have been familiar with the terminology and the realities of Solent sailing.

However I bet he re-read the Colregs before the trial! Still cutting in front of another vessel is hardly that novel a situation and has clear responsibilities for not causing danger

Judges are famous for the independence of their judgments.
Often resulting in public outcry's when they show leniency. Judges often know more about a case than is actually presented in court. certainly more than is published in the papers.
I believe or at least its a fundamental principle of the legal system they Judge only on the evidence presented.
Magistrates, would hopefully have similar principles.
So it shouldn't make any difference if the judge owns his or her own sailboat. Is a member of a yacht club. Though stories persist about secret societies.
