And as I understand it this would be an illegal activity possibly condoned by the Clyde Coastguard.
Merchant Shipping (Distress Signals and Prevention of Collisions) Regulations 1996
Yes there is an event taking place on the 31st August at 2000hrs in co-ordination with the Coastguard & Authorities. The scheduled time for release of the flares will be approx. 2015hrs but confirmation and co-ordination will be conducted over VHF Ch12 so be sure and listen for updates.
Vessels will be under strict instruction to release flares only in the area designated and at the times designated. ANY FURTHER FLARES outside these parameters is to be treated as a genuine International Distress as per the aforementioned laws. Members of the public on all coasts of the River have or are in the process of being informed about the event through their local media outlets and we expect the event to feature on the later news bulletins.
So come along and show your support. It may also be a unique opportunity to test your knowledge and handling of these devices in a controlled environment before your found scampering around in the bilges and it becomes critical.
Any questions, just ask. Oh and that link has been updated to www.saveclydecoastguard.co.uk. MSM will be in attendance and it is a one-time opportunity to show thanks to the men and women who watch over us for the last time ever after this season.
I can confirm this event is taking place as planned on the 31st August at 2000hrs in conjunction with the local Coastguard Station (third busiest in the UK) which will close in a few months time. My energy is fading now after being up all night, but I PM'd the original poster further details, some of which answer the later posts' concerns... if they wouldn't mind, they could perhaps copy the relevant contents here...
