Red Ensigns

If it comes to pass, nothing will change. In twenty years the debate on the forum will merely be about who has the right to fly a blue Euro flag, who has the right to fly a red (and blue and red defaced) and who has the right to fly the white Euro flag.

Plus ca change ...

[Edit] PS I can't believe I actually contributed to an "ensign" thread.

I'm happy to be a European. There is perhaps an additional slightly wicked pleasure in contemplating the reactions of the reactionaries and the "flag-snobs", not to mention the likely spontaneous combustion of the RYS.

I'm happy to be British. There is perhaps an additional slightly wicked pleasure in contemplating the reactions of the unelected bureaucrats and the "Let's all be Europeans", not to mention the likely spontaneous combustion of the Brussels Parliament

I like my version better, but the sentiments have similarities, irritate a group you don't like very much:-)

Re: Red Ensigns - even if the report was true ...

I would steadfastly refuse to fly the EU flag ..... unless it had a BIG from corner to corner red cross on it - showing my dislike of such flag and organisation ....

I will fly my Duster with pride till forced to take it down ...

Anyway - having seen many other EU country boats fly THEIR national flags - why should this rumour be started ??

"Here's forty thousand Cornishmen will know the reason why...."

The History of the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club

The idea of forming a Club originated from the old Port of Falmouth Regattas, which were held for many years prior to 1871. In that year, the then Mayor of Falmouth sent a "Memorial" to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales begging him to become Patron of the newly-formed Club and the consent of the Prince, later King Edward VII, was given on the 3rd November. There were 47 Founder Members and Lord Wodehouse was elected the first Commodore. In June, 1872, sanction was given by the Admiralty for members of the Club to wear the Blue Defaced Ensign and the Home Office gave permission for the word "Royal" to be incorporated in the title of the Club.

Erm, from recollection the author Erskine wossitsname, was hanged as a supporter of the Irish rebellion, so perhaps friend Davies was voicing the author's thoughts on the matter.

I'll bet you've got one of those unlawful red ensigns that have the union flag defaced with the cross of St. Patrick.

Does anyone know of a supplier of lawful red ensigns where the top left union flag consists only of the flags of Scotland and England only?

I got my Scottish "Red" from http://www.mrflag.com/p/4941/ScotlandRedEnsign.html
Trouble is you can't really see the Saltire in light winds so it looks like a run-of-the-mill red.

Pity, I enjoy being a rebel.

Anyway they're available in all different sizes. Go buy a brace, it'd be nice to see a bit more variation in what folks wear / fly.

On checking that the above link works, I notice that Mr.Flag have recently vastly increased their range - or perhaps just put it on the Web. There's a lot there for those not politically correctly inclined.

As an aside, I saw QM2 in Gib wearing a blue ensign. I thought blue was restricted to non commercial vessels?

I was going to tie up alongside and demand to see their warrant but thought better of it.

The plain blue ensign is permitted to be flown, instead of the Red Ensign, by two categories of civilian vessel:

1)British merchant vessels whose officers and crew include a certain number of retired Royal Navy personnel, or Royal Navy reservists. The number and rank of such crew members required has varied over the years, as have the additional conditions required, since the system was first introduced in 1864. Permission to fly the blue ensign was suspended during both World War I and World War II.

2)Vessels belonging to members of certain long-established British Yacht Clubs, all but one of which have "Royal" in their titles.

I see from today's Daily Mail headlines that we are about to say goodbye to the traditional Red Ensign and replace it with the 'euroflag'.

Whilst this has been mooted before ( and the Mail were only running it due to the resiliance of George Best keeping their tributes off the front page) nevertheless it got me thinking.

What a wonderful idea.

No more threads debating the difference/aptness of red/blue/white/defaced or other ensigns and we would all be able to proudly fly a sign of our euro membership at the same time as reflecting our vibrant multi-cultural and inclusive society.

I wonder if other readers of these fora agree with me ?

. However sailors from the nation, which once boasted the largest navy and the largest merchant service the world had known, having to sail under that Euro rag beggars belief.

I'm sure that the Greeks and Romans (possibly even the Danes and Dutch) aggree with you.

Its all history. In recent wars we have had to charter foreign ships to carry troops because there are almost no British ships in the merchant fleet, just flags of convenience ships. And I doubt whether they could care a damn which flag they fly as long as the rules and regs are lax, and they can employ Phillipinos etc. And thats not to mention an RN thats down almost to 3rd world size.

Re: Red Ensigns.... you forget ...

That a lot of those FOC vessels are UK owned or managed and so when chartered to Falklands etc. are still completing same charter obligations ..... so get off the soap-box ... as an ex MN Officer that left UK shipping cause it was actually not the best MN fleet to work in .... decrepit ships, crap crews, union shite etc. ...................... FOC ships provide > simple the word is provode without need to woory about requisition and all the shite penalties - which actually cost more .......

Having seen both sides - I am sad to say that Brit MN in 70's and later was a sorry picture and needed shaking up .....

I joined a flett that had 110 ships .... within 10 years that same fleet was down to 60 ships .......... BUT UK office still had the vast London Central Office ..... later they farmed out rest of ships ------ London office is still similar ..... Now tell me why >????????????

Re: Red Ensigns.... you forget ...

Finnlou, thank you for that. I am truly enlightened by para 1 of your post. Nice to see that QM2 apparently recognises this priviledge

Quite agree I have thought much the same for a long time, along the lines of, "delusions of (past)grandeur" but you've put it better

By the way, having just celebrated the Trafalgar bicentenary I am buggered if I will strike the red Ensign in favour of the Euro" Christmas tinsel design" flag. Nelson would turn in his grave.

Does that make me delusional ?
