Red Ensign Size question !

Hi All

My dads yacht is missing an ensign flag, so I was going to grab him one for Christmas but not entirely sure which size to get?

I usually buy in either: 5ft x 3ft, 3ft x 2ft and 8ft x 5ft

FYI the boat is 31feet

Also, sewn or printed?

3/4 or 1 yard I would think.

1/2 yard will look silly on a boat that size

If you really want it to look conspicuous large enough not to quite touch the water

Second thoughts 1 yard rather than 3/4 yard

Sewn wool bunting of course. Printed = cheap and nasty

Not entitled to blue ( or white) I suppose

- I have two - a smaller older one for when the weather is horrible or we're leaving the boat for a few weeks and a nice showy 1 1/4 one that nearly touches the water. I'd have gone for a 1 1/2 but SWMBO wouldn't let me. Also haven't gone for the blue one for the same reason.

On my last boat we never went abroad and I never flew an ensign or burgee of any kind.

Went for a Red Ensign Sewn Flag (1 yard) - 91cm x 45cm

I agree, but the Dutch ensign is proportioned differently to ours and looks inherently larger for the same length. For 31 ft I would go for 1 1/4 yd and sewn if possible.

Either 3/4 yd or 1 yd.
As it's for a present I think it's more important to go for the sewn version than the printed.
If you can afford the 1 yd then go for that but, if not go for the 3/4 yd.
Either will be appreciated. A sewn one will be appreciated all the more.

A 25" boat would need quite a small ensign....

On the basis of 1" to the foot a 3/4 yd one will be fine.
