Yesterday, I found my engine reluctant to run on water. Condensation had increased the level of water under the diesel.

As the water trap was a little discoloured, it was impossible to see the boundary between water and diesel. With "proper" diesel. that was not a problem.

What colour dye can I add to avoid this problem without fear of prosecution?
 
Why not replace the filter bowl

Aren't they glass?
Just clean it.
If it's plastic, polishing the inside with t-cut or metal polish might remove the colour.

There are filters from cars which have a water sensor in.
 
Having discovered the cause of lack of interest of the engine in running on water as a fuel. I obviously did clean the system and including the glass filter bowl. My comments were directed to the difficulty of distinguishing between water which had languished at the bottom of the tank and was murky and diesel. The colours were quite similar.

Is a water soluble dye not going to dissolve also in the diesel? That could be the answer if so.
 
Assuming your water trap has a drain, just drain off the water until diesel appears. It will look different and smell different.

Do you cruise to foreign parts if not red is not an issue for you, France is not an issue either. "Any" dyed fuel in Belgian waters "might" be an issue.

Is it just our RED they object to? Or Green Scandinavian diesel or green Irish diesel?? All are legit?
