Red Diesel & the RYA

Dont blame the RYA for the total lack of interest/effort by the government. If they had been serious rather than paying lipservice to maintaining red, they would have applied months ago. The fact that they didnt would have been noticed by the unelected prats in the EU who made the decision.

For goodness sake haven't you notice TB wants to be a good European. He gave away Mrs Thatchers rebate for nothing just o impress his friends it was to no benefit of this country to give another 4bn a year to the Eu so why would he stick his neck out for a load of boaties?

What did the RYA do to fight Red Diesel? They say "quiet lobbying behind the scene". Every one knows that rarely works. Why didnt they organise a blockade of the port of Antwerp-then we might have got somewhere-or if that was too extreme, the canal to Brussells. Like you I'm considering my position, as they say! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The RYA were very active in supporting red diesel. However they acted in consort with:

British Marine Federation - The National Trade Association for the leisure marine
industry (1,500 member companies providing boats, equipment, facilities and
services) and:

Federation of Petroleum Suppliers Limited - The Trade Association for almost all of
the oil distribution industry in the UK and Ireland. Its 270 member companies are
responsible for all deliveries of petroleum products for commercial, industrial and
domestic use.

Strange bedfellows if the RYA wanted to seem unbiased.

Incidentally, those members of the RYA who protested that they didn't want to be associated with the call to retain the derogation were ignored.

Re: Red Diesel & the RYA

Without wishing to be controversial, I cannot justify the non taxation of fuel for a leisure pursuit when it is taxed for essential usage. We'd be better off accepting the equal taxation of marine diesel with road fuel BUT not accepting this governments policy of taxing us on everything till the pips squeak then wasting the money raised. Just my opinion.

Hey! C'mon! The RYA worked extremely hard over the Red Diesel issue. What makes you think they didn't? Have you read the RYA magazine?

In fact the RYA was in a very difficult position over this issue since a large minority of its members supported the removal of the Red perk.

In the end they campaigned hard with other groups keeping up a constant barrage of protest in meetings with government agencies.

Well said! Bit of common sense in this debate.

Not ignored, Ken, but when there are two diametrically opposed views vying for attention, one has to lose out. It could have been the other way round.

Not necessarily .. could have opted to stay out of the argument

A quick analysis of our usual fuel purchases shows that we top up our tank (note not from anywhere near empty) 4 times per year. One of these top-ups is in Southern Brittany on our main holiday that usually is enough to get home, one was before we left and the third was to keep a full tank for the winter.

OK so with a little forward planning we will now fill in the Channel Islands on our way home from Southern Brittany in September, fill again there over the Mayday Bank Holiday and the French top-up will now be a bit bigger than before. However the French price is likely to be less than the UK's so that is a better option anyway. The extra costs overall will be easily funded by cancelling my RYA subscription and maybe one of the magazines as well.

So from me UK Tax will lose not gain.

I also run a diesel car and carry a spare can in the boot, good risk mitigation that. Rather than risk this going stale or not being a suitable 'winter' grade I might be tempted occasionally to dispose of it and refill with fresh. As the car is a business one and business fuel is tax deductable, the spare will be refilled with fresh next time it gets filled for a business trip. I wonder where I could easily dispose of the stale diesel?

... and if they had I can hear the howls of "what did the RYA ever do for us?" from both sides of the argument.
Save fuel and SAIL

Re: Red Diesel & the RYA

That "rumour" came from the EU statement which says:

[ QUOTE ]
All in all the Commission considers that Belgium, the United Kingdom and Malta have not presented any specific policy considerations that would justify their need to further derogate from the legislation enacted in the EU on unanimity at two occasions already and that would justify the existence of a fiscal measure that clearly contradicts several Community policies. The arguments put forward by the Member States concerned rather represent consequences of the existence of the derogation itself for a long period of time.

Re: Red Diesel & the RYA

What bothers me about this is that the red stain is going to be in my fuel for years to come, given that right now I have a full tank of red, and I don't use that much in a season, and seldom let it go below half-full.
If an official shows up with the power to sample my fuel in say 2008, what's to stop me getting prosecuted for using red diesel, especially if say I'm in Holland so there's a language problem to cope with as well?
