Red diesel staining

Does anyone know if there is a way to remove red diesel residue from a plastic fuel can that I want to reuse for white diesel.
I wondered if a swill out with thinners might do the trick?
But is it necessary?

What is your percieved problem?

The staining is unlikely to contaminate any white carried in the can.

As long as there is no red diesel in cans on a UK boat in the EU, all should be well.

There are TWO 'dies' in Red Diesel ... Red Marker and Yellow Detector.

Both are persistent and claims of Fullers Earth etc as removing one or other are old Wives Tales ...

For you - stained plastic ? Ignore the staining as its virtually impossible to remove .. maybe acid wash - but then you are getting into dangerous ground.

Seriously - if worried about some authority testing your 'white' and finding trace of Red .. just show the can !!

Thinners will not do the job.

tbh if it is a 5 or 10L hand can and you are concerned then a new can is the best option for peace of mind
