Red diesel safe for 2007

I have had a theory for quite some time now.
Instead of importing oil from those wonderfully sunny foreign climes - why not import solar power? Spread the otherwise worthless desert with huge solar panels and store the electricity in huge 'Tankers' (capacitors) which will then take it wherever its needed and plug in to the local 'Grid' or further storage. A steady chain of such vessels could replace the current super-tankers, and maybe a cable could replace the current pipelines.
To my mind (jaundiced?) this is no less feasible than the current set up for importing oil.

In any event I don't believe it would be possible to do worse than the lot we have now. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif They definitely don't have any coherent policies.

sadly I agree your conclusions too - don't see a lot of anything in this

personally I am also more interested in what the medium/long term solution is than the transition as well as this will have a significantly greater impact on my boating (and a lot of related issues) than 'another year of red'.

This is a long runner and is really rudderless (from a G'ment point of view) currently.

If HMG were serious about green fuel then biofuel would be essentially untaxed, or minimally so. That would actually make using the stuff a serious option for a very large number of people and establish the idea that differential taxation was moving users to greener fuel.

Of course, the governmnet would need to move off their addiction to taxes and acquire some form of integrity.

The "otherwise worthless" deserts you talk of are a natural wilderness. Haven't we destoryed enough of that yet without seeing it as something that can just be used to satisfy our own needs?

I've actualy move away from the home counties myself. I suggest we bulldoze the otherwise worthless 2nd rate towns and villages and build a nuclear reactor surounded by landfill sites. At least everyone else will have more power than they actually need. We should have more "right" to do that as it' part of the UK.

An excellent suggestion for southern Essex, with the added advantage that the landfill sites are already there (Mucking Marshes etc). Don't tell SWMBO though

I have a question - will they be able to "diesel dip" boats as they do cars/trucks, and will the same duty go on Central Heating fuel which, from experience, works fine in boats! (So far!!). It would be easy enough to buy an old heating tank and get it filled at home if it was cheaper, (currently 35.1p/litre) just a pain to transfer said contents into your floating palace. Any one know the answers?
