Red diesel duty confirmed as 60/40 split

urgh.

Did you read the bit that HMRC said that they will accept the 60/40 split as the most likely for all boats?

Anyway, I dont use ANY diesel in the marina, but when I go out, I might choose to spend my time on the hook, running the genny for power and the eber for heat.

Infact, I might choose to use the eber for heat in the marina too.

I agree its open to abuse, but it seems very clear (and it has to be said sensible) that they will consider 60/40 a fair split, but if you are a livaboard or a sailing yacht which spends little time steaming you can still claim a higher domestic use without too much hassle.

I'm sorry if your hope for eutopia of a Solent free from us nasty sinky motorboaters has been dashed for another few years at least.
 
I am glad that HMRC have calculated my usage at a 60/40 split, as it was way too complicated for me. I could easily have made a mistake and calculated it wrongly and ended up paying too much duty.

Remember, HMRC are civil servants, and in common with many other Government departments are there to ensure that we claim all the allowances and entitlements that we should - just look at the big pushes they have to make sure people claim tax credits, family allowances etc.

Some people will indeed use more than 40% for heating, such as liveaboards and raggies, and I'm sure that they will be able to prove it. I'm glad I won't have to though, as it is very complicated.

Incidentally, short of having a leccy radiator, I have no choice other than to burn diesel for heating in the marina.

All this talk of defrauding the revenue and splits,

1. a 60/40 split at today's price (I believe around 88ppl is the modal rate) gives a price to you of £1.23 per litre

2. I can go and by fully taxed road fuel today, at £1.23 per litre.

Surprise, surprise, both sources are the same price.
Oooh - could it be that HMRC realised that when suggesting a split. at £1.50 a litre many folks would be tempted to cart jerry cans full of road diesel to their boats - not to be encouraged.

So chaps, you have an alternative; buy MGO conveniently, delivered to your boat by the marina's pump, and take HMRC's offering for what it's worth; simply a price mechanism.

OR if your conscience still pricks you, flagellate yourself but humping cans or drums of DERV to your boat every trip. No worries about unfair use - 2% for heating, 98% for roaring around on the plane, you've paid full duty - so it doesn't matter how much your domestic use is.

for heavens sake stop rabbiting about the issue and accept what you have been offered. OK the dealer gets 20ppl at the marina rather than HMRC, but I'm sure somebody saw sense in the public interest (possible pollution incidents).

Jez is right. The RYA chap is missing the point (unless he said what he said before today's announcement?). Point is, HMRC just dont care what your actual split is. If your heating/gen uses just 1% of the fuel they will still not pursue you if you stay within the 60/40 safe harbour when buying fuel. There are parallels to this in many other areas of tax law, where they publish a safe harbour and if you keep within it you don't get bothered regardless of your actual circumstnaces, and you're free to step outside it but then you might have to justify. All perfectly pragmatic

Yes I am shouting, bloody loudly.

You might pay £0.88/litre, some might pay more but if you actually take your head out of your arse and look around it is poissible to get it for less. And I am not talking about some back ally deal. Lymington YH do it for that price, and you dont even have to stay the night.

As for winging, I dont think anyone is.
 
So does this mean the Tax man will have a full record of who filled up their sunseeker and where?
 
Then of course, I dont always pay for my fuel, some one else does some times.

Anyway, the job seems sorted now, it's 60- 40 if the marinas etc play ball.

Mind, it does beg the question, when the local narrow boaters call in at my local garage with a can. Well he normally fills tractors and things. He's no reason to ask if you need it for a boat.

What I think you will find is that we will be paying a little less than we were expecting, & we don't have to sod about keeping records. I was beginning to worry that they might want to know how many golf balls I loose in a round of golf next. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Also as a plus for the industry I had done my sums on worst case scenario & decided I could carry on, but now will have some pennies left out of my budget, so a bigger boat one day perhaps?. How many others may think the same way at some point in the future, could be just what the marine industry needs. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just to confirm. I filled up on Saturday at Chichester and paid .71 p per litre.

I filled up on Saturday and took on 380 litres at a cost of £269.80.
Using Saturday's prices of .71p at the marina and £1.23 at the forecourts, as of November 1st using 60\40 split, the same amount of fuel will cost me £388.36 or £1.02p per litre.

This is a bit harsh, fine if you can zap around the solent and have a choice of places to go all very close to each other. But if your cruising around the coast you have to refuel where you are, you can't shop around. The average around the UK is not 71ppl. On the River Thames where trueblue was quoting, it is 88ppl generaly with a premium because of the low quantities sold. The Coast is the same, I refeulled a couple of weeks ago at Eastbourne 72ppl, fine but then Ramsgate was 84ppl, but I needed full tanks for safety and could hardly shop around. There was nowhere else to go and it would be reckless to risk running out... err hum.. unlike some have done around here /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Could someone tell me a simple way for working out what fuel will cost per litre with the 60/40 split.

Is it as simple as adding £0.34 to the current pump price (£0.95 at the moment!)?
