Red diesel duty confirmed as 60/40 split

Re: Not by my calculations -

£1.04 sounds reasonably fair when compared to the continent.

On the MBM Holland cruise last month we paid £1.06 at Nieuwport. And that's at about €1.25 / £.

Any chance of the pound euro rate going back to 1.5 ? No, didn't think so /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sterling has bounced back a bit recently against the Euro on the back of concerns about stalling economies in Germany and Italy and reduced likelihood of interest custs here but 1.5 is but a distant memory, I fear

I would have thought 1.35 is probably the balance rate for the forseeable.

Oh!!!!!

Yes Please.....

My costs have risen by 16% since this time last year....and I just cant put prices up by that amount...10% is all i dare.....so back to 1.35 would mean i am making extra dosh.....

Re: Not by my calculations -

Looks like I might manage to continue potter up and down the river for a bit then, but WOT trips down to the salty stuff look like they may now be memories.

How soon before someone is done to encourage the others? I give it about 6 months, so that it is no longer theoretically winter. The boat will be an expensive new one and it will be the result of an anonymous tipoff by a "concerned environmentalist". The accusation will later, at much expense to the boater, turn out to have been false and quite possibly malicious. The boater will be stuck with a big bill and no compensation, the courts will have ruled that the accusation was made in good faith by someone worried about MMGW...

Re: Not by my calculations -

I think in the short term the euro will weaken quite a bit as I will have 200,000 any minute and I never get the benefit of the exchange rate. I'll tip you off just before I swap them to stirling though, because no doubt once I do the euro will gain unstoppable strength.

Re: Not by my calculations -

I'm not sure that'll really happen Andrew. The 60/40 group can't be attacked by HMRC in law and just wont be. If HMRC challenge someone the argument will be over a claim of say 45 or 50% propulsion, instead of 60%. The £amount at stake will be a few hundred quid per fill up, so even if they go after someone for the last 5 or 6 fill ups the money at stake will be a couple of grand, tops. /and some will have a good defence, eg liveaboards. No-one will be publicly hung drawn and quartered for such peanuts. Thry'll just psy up and it'll all be very quiet. Most folks will do 60/40 and have a quiet life.

remeber also that HMRC do not act on all tip offs. They know that perhaps 90% of tip offs are malicious and they screen them all and ignore the huge majority of them. They aren't sdtupid!

Same happens in France for years, where you can buy detax or taxed depending on your circumstnaces. I have helped a case where superyacht owner bought detax when they shouldn't. He just handed over the €5000 or whatever the tax men wanted, and moved on. It isn't worth even fighting about.

Re: Not by my calculations -

Yup, I could live with 1.35 but that's a long way off. I'd be very surprised if we saw that before the economy turned up, maybe 2010?

Re: Not by my calculations -

Maybe a bit cynical on my part, my ex ran off with a greenie (complete with dubious personal hygiene and no apparent job) and my daughter was subjected to "boat owners are evil parasites who should be taxed out of existence" BS recently. As she adores boating she was quite upset.

Chaps, I don't understand the system, what is the 60/40 split? do i need to buy a diesal cooker to show some domestic use apart form the hot air system? Do I say to the supplyer it is 60/40 so he charges me the right amount?

It would appear to be as simple as that. you also have to sign a declaration that your split is correct. the important thing is if you declare up to 40% of your tank is for domestic puropses, then there will be now requirement to keep records as HMRC will just accept it.

Apparently so. You can tell them it's 20/80 if you wish and they will charge accordingly, but be prepared to keep some records to justify why your domestic consumption is so high.

If you accept 60/40, then so will HMRC and no need to keep records.

Are you sure about fuel being used to generate power at anchor etc. I'd heard that if burnt in an engine used for propulsion, the fuel was considered as propulsion fuel. Be very pleased to bo told I'm wrong /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

don't know about you but my port engine heats my hot water tank and can take up to three hours to get a really hot shower /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
and my starboard charges the domestic battery bank and that probably takes longer /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Did you read the PBO report, from the RYA chap, marina based boats will find it hard to claim the allowance. May be a read the small print first job.
As I read what is said, a marina based boat can use the mains to charge batteries, cook and heat, so it is upto proving that you sit at anchor all day, heating and running the genny for most of the time to claim your 40%.
