red diesel? Can i use it?

Hi, did a search for previous postings r.e the use of red diesel. All my friends by farm red diesel and put it in their boats, regardless that the law says you cant i think! am i right in saying the full road duty must be paid? I plan to go to France, can i fill up with red first ( from a marina), or can i fill up by cans at the garage? Must i keep receipts to show duty paid, am i likely to get asked for receipts? Any advice appreciated!dont want hassle when get abroad thanks!

Legally you are not allowed to use farm diesel in your boat . If you are going to france just buy red at 60/40 split at waterside pump and keep the receipt . If you want to take any cans make sure anyone checking finds them empty .

You are unlikely to persuade the local garage to allow you to buy red diesel at 60:40 tax split so it will possibly be more expensive or illegal, depending what tax rate you are asked to pay.

I assume that cans need to be empty when you arrive in France as IIRC they don't allow you to "import" red diesel other than in your fuel tank.

I wouldnt recommend this but storing 10 cans of red on your boat in a french marina isnt importing it.
Its only imported when you land it on the hard which the OP isnt going to do.

Filling the cans road side exactly 100 L of duty paid fuel would give receipts to show 5 jerry cans were filled with duty paid fuel and these could be used to top up for the return crossing.

You are allowed red diesel in your tanks if you have the receipts to prove that you paid tax on it. It is illegal to have red diesel in cans in Europe. There is an information sheet from the RYA explaining exactly what you can and cannot do.

its exactly all this sort of red tape n hair spliting that i will not tollerate 1 way or another!!! ......they move the goalposts as is their desire and then blockade the harbours so you are either stuck outside in a F8 or locked in against your will at their mercey !!!....if you make it through that lot, the ships papers will have a fullstop that is to big, or you wont have the correct permit for your EU coloured trousers !!!!! thats why you could not afford to PAY me to go there again....................rant switch off now !!

Thought filling up with white diesel at a garage maybe cheaper than a 60/40 split at a marina, but perhaps not!am running nothing but my engine so going for a 60/40 split maybe pushing it. Whats the chances of getting asked for receipts? Anyone been asked to produce these?Typical i buy a boat then they introduce the full rate on fuel! Run my car on vegetable oil, maybe this is the way to go!

"want to be on the right side of the law"......thats the point i was trying to make in my "sacastic sledgehammer way"...the fact that "over there" the time you leave here and arrive there, the rules have changed twice and they all want a "cut " of your "fine"..rules seem to appear out of the fog just as you call for permission to berth eg. my mate had the experience of having 2 vhf antenna on the starboard side, the curtosey flag was placed on the inner of the 2 antenna,s they said it should of been on the outer !! 95euro fine......good luck on your trip but i,ll stay here thanks.
