Recycled PBO, won't buy another copy!

They will always repeat after a few years. I keep buying because the odd new item does appear and makes sense (to me). Im my view PBO is going back to its roots and title which is a good thing.

I suspect there is still a sufficient congregation of boat owners interested in 'some' of the DIY stuff..... maintenance, clever small improvements, 'what works best', tips and tricks of the trade.... and I'm quite certain that the pro staff involved know quite well what their ( paying ) market is. The difficulty is finding a ready supply of the right people, with the right written communication skills, and the right insights and interests to produce fresh readable copy often enough through the year(s) to fill the mag.

A lot of good stuff simply reads turgid!

You can't expect pro journalists to keep improvising interesting, topical, readable - even engaging - copy month after month, year after year. They run out of 'huff and puff'....

That's why youngsters such as BM are fast-tracked into the role of 'practical boat-owning pundit'. There are "dead men's shoes" to fill....

So who's going to write us 2000 wurds on lighting a pressure paraffin lamp and trimming the wick...?

Need to be careful here.... there's an outbreak of nostalgia in the offing! ;)

To go along with my PBO from 1967 onwards, I have a 1960 Motor Boat and Yachting Manual which brings back memories of my Dad choosing a new engine for his converted lifeboat in 1960.

In the MB&Y Manual there is listed all the engines from yesteryear.

Austin-Healey
BMC
Brit
Coventry Climax
Coventry Victor
Feltham
Kelvin
Medows
Parsons
Simmonds Ford
Stuart
Watermota
Wortham Blake.

In the end he chose a 20 HP BMC Vedette (based on a 950 cc Morris Minor engine @ £185 (no VAT) This replaced and old hand start Austin Lifeboat engine. Oh the joy of an electric starting engine and electricty.

Could it be that there is nothing much new in the world of yachting. FWIW I find the same as you do after 25 years of reading the mags but I am blessed with a failing memory so everything seems new to me. Maybe I shall stop my sub and simply re-read the old copies for the first time each time!

P.S. I challenge you to think of the subject for an article that hasnt previously been covered in the mags.

I bet you cant find a previous article about making a new exhaust elbow for an MD22!
