Recycled (Circular Economy or Closed Loop) Sail Manufacturing

I never keep a boat long enough to replace sails and the eco bit is of no real interest. My concern in buying sails would be cost vs how long they keep their shape.

As for re-cycling, what about making sail bags, jackets etc from them. I would be perfectly happy to dump my old sails at a sailmaker, probably the one supplying the next set. So no need for the deposit system. In any case with ( say) a ten year life, a deposit is more likely a give away. Will the sailmaker still be going? Will the money be worth anything much?

P.S. I should hope that you are a profiteer. Why else would you be in business?

+1

There cannot be circular economy without a benefit for the consumer, or a law "imposing" it if it results in a detriment to the consumer.

I too agree that I would never put a deposit to replace sails that I might no longer own in the long term.

That sounds like a good idea to extend the use of a product. However, one still has to decide what to do with the jacket, sailbags etc. when worn out. Apart from the waste in producing them from old sails ( Possibly as high as 19% :encouragement::encouragement:) I might even have to dump my Musto kit --which cost nearly as much as my last jib

So in the end one will still end up needing a nice big hole to put them in. -- But by then someone might come up with a scheme to recycle them as sails ??? & we can start the thread all over again
