On a more serious note, please could all trailer sailer people, be it motor or sail, make sure that their craft is fully secure before taking it up the slip being towed behind whatever vehicle they use?
At Mylor on Sunday a young boy of three(?) was killed, and one of five injured when the boat came off its trailer, and shot back down the slip.

Wow, that really makes you think.

My two girls love to go and watch at the public launch on Windermere. It is nice when it goes smoothly but that appears to be only about 2 in 10. The other 8 are just a comedy of errors, but luckily nothing as serious as this.

"comedy of errors" I have seen some very near misses at ferry nab. As you say thankfully nothing as terrible as this.

Looking at this I think a portion of the blame should be laid at the feet of the parents of the poor little souls that got injured and killed. A slipway is not a place for kiddies to be playing, supervised or not.
Theres vehicular traffic and heavy bits of plastic being moved around. with little or no official body overlooking proceedings.
Its tragic that a nipper has been injured and one killed. Its should not have happened. Common sense tells you its not a safe area to let kiddies play.

Echo the comments of the original post. The boat should be secured to the trailer with at least one rope round the winch post and not rely on the winch to hold it there. Lets hope and pray that this will be the last incident of its kind.

It always shocks me that people dont plan better, I dont launch and recover my boat much but when i do I always ensure that we have 1 person in the boat to drive it away/on and 1 to untie the front rope and everyone else either in the car or well out of the way.

The amount of people that launch with no-one in the boat and then try and drag the boat with 1 rope, normally a ski rope, suprises me.

I watch 1 boat launch with 1 lady in it not at the wheel, she did not move from her seat even when the boat was hitting other on the jetty!!!!

Barry, they were not playing on the slipway, they were sitting on a wall no doubt watching all the activity as probably we have all done at some time. A very tragic accident, and I can't see how the parents are in any way to blame.

Ah well in that case I retract my statement, due to the fact that I wasn't if full possesion of the facts.
Slipways are not the place for kiddies though. The best we can hope from this is that people will use a bit of "common" and take care when launching/retrieving.
