Yes thats right on both counts BUT the knob that surrounds the stop button is the idle speed adjustment.

You probably not noticed that its a knob that turns!..... needs quite a bit of turning to make much difference to the speed........ cant remember off hand even which way speeds it up and which way slows it down.

You'll see when I get the manual available for you.

does anyone know the size diameter for the pull cord..on ebay they have 4mm 5mm or 6mm.
its started to fray so needs replacing

I take it that the starter is the vertical type with a bendix gear on the top. See picture below

Its something I have written in the owners manual Page 8!

3mm by 59½"

I see I have also made a note of the number of turns to wind up the spring before fitting a new cord if the old one has broken and allowed the spring to completely unwind.

Never had to do it but looked at what might be involved. Bit of a fiddle I think and useful to have a second pair of hands. If you can pull the old cord out do so. Jam the mechanism so that the spring does not unwind. Fit the new cord and let it slowly wind itself in.

( you know that in an emergency you can wrap a knotted cord round the flywheel and use that ... Seagull engine style.

yes thats it. so 3mm then.
its a little stiff to pull and slow to return but im loathed to mess with it as Ive done one before and not a pleasant way to waste a whole day

It should not be stiff. Should pull very freely. Maybe some lubrication needed somewhere.
If it does not wind in fully check the pre-tensioning of the spring.

it does wind in all the way eventually but when pulled and recoiled it makes a noise similar to a scalded cat.
cant think where to lubricate it. loathed to dismantle completely as dreadful to get back in but may have to

Mine makes a slight squaky noise I suppose, but rewinds instantly and as far as I remember silently.

Cannot really get at mine at the moment in the corner of the garage and anyway is all dry having not been used for 18months . I can tell though that the starter mechanism turns freely even if the engine doesn't without some water to lubricate the water pump.

Exploded diagram here http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/EVINRUDE/1984/E6RCRM/REWIND STARTER - 6-8/parts.html

I dont think it will be as difficult to take apart and reassemble as those with a spring like a giant clock spring..... difficult to get those back in once they have escaped without special tools

the last one i did was on top of flywheel type and was a nightmare to do. will look at this one then as different and easier to access

I think so.
I remember the first ( and only) time I let the spring in one of the "top of the flywheel" types escape.
