Recommended safety equipment for coastal cruising..

Call it emergency or safety equipment whatever you like bu there certainly is some gear you should have on board. Maps and GPS hand held or plotter are essential. Here is a check list from, Australian Yachting for racing coastal. Cat 3

Might give you some ideas. Note here as Clive Cooper says EPIRB is much more relied upon here in West Oz than say VHF DSC or AIS. To complie with any racing type standard would be a good claim to diligence or credibility. ol'will
 
The most important safety feature on any boat, and also the biggest risk to safety, is the skipper.

All the gear in the world is no substitute for the former, or compensation for the latter.

You could add to that:
A good grew
An adequate plan.
 
Tool box, string (at least 2x height of mast), spare rope, a couple of spare blocks (aka pulleys) and some Lucas crimp connectors have saved me numerous times.

The lifejacket, harness, life raft, radio, epirb etc never have (thanks be to God). As for the horse-shoe, I rather suspect that one of these has never, in in all yachting history, saved anyone.

PS: And assorted fibre washers.
