I live near Birmingham - about 2.5 hours from the Solent and have just begun yachting. Does anybody have recommendations on good cruising areas easily reached from the Midlands?
Seriously though, North Wales is within reach of the Birmingham Navy, but free berths are hard to find. What are you looking for - towing and launching, marina berth, mooring...?
Your query would be easier to answer if you provide details of length of time and method of transport in order to reach the cruising area. Some advice on type of cruising would help.
Sorry - put the lack of info down to lack of experience. As I say, I've only just started yachting and had done no sailing when I did an introduction to yachting course last October. At this stage I'm only looking for crewing opportunities at weekends to gain experience. I gained competent crew cert a few weeks ago but I thought I'd ask for advice so that I'd have a good idea of places to look for crewing opportunities or for places where I could pay for a weekend on board.
The characteristics of different cruising areas along the west coasts of the British Isles are described on my website. You may find it helpful, and it will certainly will give you something to think about, since the good and bad points of each area are listed.
Met a guy on his boat here (Norway) who lives in Brum. But as his boat here in Bergen and as had it here for a number of years. Hes said its cheaper to keep it here and fly or take the boat (ferry) over...
If you are new to sailing you need somewhere easy to start with. The Solent is wall to wall with beemers from the M25, M6 and M27, the Bristol chanel rushes in and out faster than the Central Line and all the airports are coming under pressure from the fuel/cash/food crisis! Come to sunny Plymouth and cruise in peace! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
