Planning a few weeks in the Split area of Croatia in June. Would welcome any recommendations for stunning and not too commercialised anchorages (not marinas). Thanks in advance.

June is a great time to go. Quiet compared to July and August and a bit cooler. There are so many anchorages/mooring buoys available at that time of the year but some of the ones which you can do in June without stressing about whether you will find space are, Krk Falls (past Sibenik, up the river, across the lake, anchor opposite Skradin Marina). Hvar (anchor/mooring buoy in the bay), Bol (anchor off Zlati Rat).

Over the years, several of us have contributed to this map:

It should give you plenty of ideas. :)

So so many - krknasje on Drvenik Veli is a must do for us - in 3m turquoise near the shore.Pokrovenik on north shore of Hvar is stunning and Badija by Korcula town has a sumptuous view of the mountains and acres of space to anchor. Tonight we are more in the thick of it on Hvar Town quay.

We have a Google Earth KML file of many Croatian Anchorages, mostly from cruisers who have been there in the last three years and also updated with our experiences last summer. Almost all the recent anchorages documented are free of any charges.

If anyone wants a copy just pm your email address to me and I will forward it to you.

Hello. I am knew to this site. Some very useful info on this thread thanks. I will be sailing out of Pula for 2 weeks mid August with my Wife and our two boys 8 and 10yrs. I know it will be busy compared to previous years when we went in May. Could anyone suggest an itinerary? We would prefer free anchorages and avoid the marinas other than maybe once or twice a week. Is there much west of Pula?

There are lots of anchorages west of Pula,
Follow the coast, Vestar, Rovinj, Vrsar, there are quite few fantastic places going towards Porec....

We've anchored just off Vile Rubin, anchored in the south part of Rovinj bay and on a mooring buoy in the middle of Umag bay. A little south of Pula and around the corner is Medulin which is well worth a visit. It also a great anchorage if a Bura is on the way.

They are all interesting bays with plenty of restaurants although I, personally, don't find the sailing on the west Istrian coast as interesting as sailing amongst the islands further south. From Pula you are only a 32-mile day sail to Susak, the sand island, and a further shorter sail across to Rab town which I think is more picturesque and less touristy than the Istrian towns and also has a great anchorage.

Hi Richard

I’d really like to see this map but I can’t seem to open it. Is there any chance you could send another link?

Many thanks.

Tim

Nice site - surprised it misses out one of my favourite anchorages - Pokrovenik on Hvar. But that may be one of the reasons it often seems to have just one or two overnighters even in July and August.

Pokrivenik is a place I've been meaning to try after you recommended it some years ago but it's a bit out of the way so we've never actually made it. It is marked on my electronic chart as a "place of interest". :)

We got into a bit of a routine which made it fit a "lets show off Croatia to a friend" week. Kremik to Krknasje, Krknasje to Jelsa on Hvar for a party night, Jelsa to Pokrovenik for a hungover morning motor and swimming day, then Pokrovenik to Korcula Town for a nice meal and usually to send them off on the morning ferry back to Split or wherever for their plane. So it became on the way to somewhere.

Strajinska on Solta. Deep. But empty. Vroboska on Hvar. Nudies on shore but empty by dusk. Moto rentals on the quay that is over run by charter boats. Anchor out in the outer bay and dinghy in. Rent a moto and put put over to Hvar town to watch mooring antics and then come home to cheaper better food and a tranquil Anchorage. Raciste on Korcula. Same deal with an easy bus ride into Korcula town. Ston? Can anchor at the entrance to the canal and dinghy in but we happily paid up the equivalent of 10 Euro for side tying to the quay. Climb the "Great Wall" to Mali Ston. Also if you're up for exploring Dubrovnik then head to the head of the bay at Zaton. Regular buses into Dubrovnik.
