Hi all,
I lurk a lot and post little (bow down to your collective knowledge without commenting much). This is a post about a couple of recommendations for people that helped us last weekend. Above and beyond the call - in my view. History:
Last weekend, we had a very pleasant trip from PS via Lymington (lobster and beer stop on Fri evening) to Weymouth. One of our anchorages on Sat was Lulworth Cove where our little S34 managed to raft and hold our friend, a T47 on our anchor (T47 anchor issues). We had a great afternoon generally messing around and a huge BBQ, messing around in the RIB etc.
Coming out of the cove both boats suffered engine overheat within 1 min of having powered up. We both struggled to clear our respective engines, floating around to clear weed out of the strainers etc. We then both motored to Weymouth c. 10kn and then played around in the marina for a bit to try and free the problem.
T47 - no issue, shafts, so a big "poke with a stick" sorted it. I wasn't so lucky. lots of fiddling, looking at strainers, impellers etc, no joy. Finally called a diver to have a look at the inlets on the outdrives. thought it would be easier and basically it was sat night and I didn't want to get wet.
So. Called Apex Divers in Weymouth. They're a pro outfit so would have cost £xk however they called one of their chaps that wanted some beer money and he turned up within 40mins. I called him @ 1800... He pulled lots of weed out of both intakes but it didn't work (obvious next day).
Sun - c. 6 hours from Weymouth to Cowes at displacement speed - not great but I did get to watch the GP tho' whilst bobbing around!
Arrived Cowes rather than PS as I wanted a weekend and we were in for the big splash next weekend. Called Rob Kitcher (card at Cowes YH and recommended by people I know in Cowes) @ 1730 on Sun eve to ask for help. He rang back in 10 mins, warned of a lift and "leg off". Said he'd be there first thing Mon AM. He was. Problem fixed by 10:00 and no lift.
In a nutshell, I had a problem over the weekend that could have taken me out for a couple of weeks of the season (the resolution wasn't obvious to the diver or Rob initially). I got it resolved within 24h because people could be bothered to help. Unusual in my corporate world..
As an aside, volvopaul replied to my e-mails with helpful suggestions within 5 mins of me sending them on Sat but he was on hols.
What a community! We're normally quick to judge however I had outstanding service from people I had no relationship with. In summary, Apex Divers in Weymouth and Rob Kitcher in Cowes come highly recommended - as does volvopaul
Respective details on request.
