As the date for the new boat gets nearer, I'm starting to put a tool kit together. I would be grateful for your recommendations on what to put in the toolbox.

Thanks in advance
Jon

- Duck Tape
- Plus a knife or scissors with which to cut it

If you can't fix it with Duck Tape, it's clearly time for professional help.

nobody else has seemed to mention woodworking tools. If you use wood on board then you will need tools. fine quality saw, preferably pull type. Wood glue small plane.
The kit depends on how you sail. If you live aboard even just for the summer you may well spend time in odd place doing modifications to the boat. If you sail at weekends you just need get you home emergency kit.
What about sail mending kit, rope splicing gear etc. etc.

Seriously...

Apart from all the other excellent suggestions, one tool I keep finding uses for is a big (about 16") pair of waterpump pliers.

Along with all the other excellent suggestions, dont forget to include a tube of sikaflex and some araldite. Araldite and duck tape are the best combination of rapid bodge gear that you could possibly wish for and will solve all sorts of problems./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

You don't mention the kitchen sink, on second thorts you've already got two of those.

Only 25 litres of engine oil for those huge lumps? Even I carry more than that! Do they ever need topping up between services? And wots the clingfilm for?

Duck Tape and WD40. Use the tape for fixing things together, that have come apart, and WD40 for getting things apart that are stuck together.

It is a tough call. On a more serious note, a set of ring, open ender mm spanners, long nosed and normal plies, various sized screwdrivers, both flat, and crosshead. Adjustable spanner, mole grips, pvc tape, some electical wire, and a length of normal wire. The latter can be used for fastening and bodging most things that break, and need a temporary repair, especially if used with tape. Oh also a bundle of cable ties.

That should not take up too much space, but get you out of most of the small breakages, breakdowns that happen while away.

Some tools I have found invaluable, other than the ordinary already posted, though I don' t think I can add to TCM's comprehensive list.

B&Q sell rubber handled spanners, open both ends, metric one end imperial the other; Even though these look like Fisher Prices my first spanner kit they have a great function, each size has a different colour handle, this makes ID in the tools kit quick and simple, the rubber is ridged which makes them excellent for cold and slippy hands. Much easier to say to SWMBO pass us the red spanner for example, if she is not an engineering type. Buy two sets, so many bolts on boats require holding both ends, unlike cars which tend to use threads.

A big over size adjustable spanner, big enough for gas bottle and stern gland, also great when leverage is required.

A good quality set of posi / philips screwdrivers, you can skimp on flat blade, but cheap philips destroy the screws.

Make a canvass type bag and write string on it. Never throw away your offcuts put them in the bag, you will need a 20 in piece of cord one day and it will be there in the string bag.

A cold chisel (long)

A shackle key

Electricians screwdrivers, especially for wiring up 12v lights etc.

Wire, a small reel to do an emergency repair to get you home, assorted crimps.

Cotter pins

Torch (mag light) small enough to hold in your mouth when trying to undo bleed valve while balancing like russian gymnast over engine.

A good, serated, sawing knife! Wire cutters

Hope this helps a bit

I wonder...

If you follow these recommendations, Jon, I wonder whether you might need to change your order to a SO35 to get a bit more space for the toolkit!

Re: I wonder...

Or repaint the waterline!
Like others I couldn't possibly add to TCM's list, I don't have half of them myself - I should print it out and pay a visit to B&Q. The tools I find I use most often are the spanners and the biggest screwdriver in the shop. It's basically a 3/8" by 20" bar with a flat on one end and a handle on the other. It will even undo things that aren't screwed together, if wielded correctly. The gas soldering iron has hardly ever been used, but I was glad it was there when I did need it. Oh and the hammer. Useful for everything that doesn't respond to WD40 (e.g. vhf, engine, recalcitrant crew....).
Alternatively, always moor next to TCM, and borrow his toolkit.
