Sorry, me again.

So far I've got the following on the spares list:-

Oil filter
Fuel filter elements
Seawater pump impeller
Insulated electrical wire
Grease for stern gland
Oil for engine
Alternator belt

Any further suggestions would be gratefully received - the boat is a Sun Odyssey 32 with a Yanmar 2GM20 engine.

Thanks for the help on the tools, and tcm, I'm not carrying a spare short engine.

Lots and lots of stainless nuts/screw etc. in every likely size.

All sorts of electrical bits. Definately spare alternator. At least brushes for the starter motor.

Shackles in all sizes and cramp-clamps etc. Spare rigging wire.

Plenty of scrap metal (ideally stainless). Lots of hose in as many forms as possible. Everything you've ever replaced.

Tools, tools, tools.

Sorry, list goes on and on, and boat gets heavier.

Vic

you could always take a whole spare engine! Might be a good idea for blue water cruising, but not an essential spare round Europe.

and other necessities such as,
--an old car inner tube with a pair of scissors for making the seal or gasket you forgot
-- a single strand from heavy rigging cable or metal coat hanger for poking into holes and water passages
--- a plastic bag marked plastic baggery for all the plastic bags you accumulate
-- schnorkel and mask for use when clearing prop..preferably with wet suit top
-- tube of silicone grease..or several 'cos they disappear quickly
-- battery acid test syringe for clearing blocked ears after clearing prop
-- electric loud hailer with built-in translator to Greek argot
You may consider selling the leatherman clone or huge Swiss army knife donated by well meaning relative. If you fall heavily with one of those in your pocket, it won't be funny. I know.
Cheers....R

If you took everything suggested here, and responses to similar questions, you would be in danger of having a cluttered heavy boat that sailed like a slug. So I am going to say the opposite. You are probably not going to be sailing across oceans or around continents, so you should keep the clutter down to something more appropriate to the sailing you are going to do and the size of boat you sail. Of course take a basic set of tools and spares, but avoid filling up your boat with equipment that you will never use, because 1) it is expensive 2) it gets in the way 3) it will deterioate.

So in addition to the engine spares you have mentioned, I take the following collection of spares...

A few shackles of various sizes
2 snatch blocks
A few bulldog wire clamps
A handful of different nuts, bolts, washers and self tappers
A dozen cable ties
A few chocolate box electrical connectors
Sewing/whipping twine
Sail patches
Light bulbs and fuses
Some cable ties
A few jubilee clips
Insulating and self-amalgamating tape
Assorted bits of rope, cord, shock cord and tape
Epoxy and impact adhesives
A full length batten that can be cut to required length
A section of old inner tube for cutting seals and gaskets
A spare cleat handle
A few spare sail slugs (when I had a sail that used that system)
A small tube of gelcoat repair
Set of emergency navigation lights
Spare batteries suitable for the equipment that uses them

If it helps, I have listed the problems encountered on a 2000 mile coastal trip I did in 2001 here.

this thread has got a bit silly. next thing it'll be a spare boat you can cannibalize for spares.

at the other extreme, one of the french s/handed racers would only take a mole wrench and a screwdriver on the basis that anything he couldn't fix with those meant he was out of the race anyway.

the big question is how far are you going? if it's likely to take you far off the beaten track the one spare i'd advise above all others is an alternator. if you're usually within reach of a chandler then what you need is to make up the kit that every seasoned sailor has acquired over the years-

spare shackles, pins, tape, string, glue, half-used tubes of sealant, wd40, bags of assorted bolts, nuts & screws, odd lengths of rope, dinghy patches, offcuts of wood, metal, plastic etc.

and you can be sure that however many spares you take, in every port you'll be in a chandlery looking for something!
