Any recommendations for someone to do an outboard service on a 6HP 4 stroke Tohatsu? With Bill at Emsworth Marina now long gone I'm missing a good engineer, and the guys I bought it from are charging main dealer prices.. I'm in Emsworth but I can travel within reason

Pls, no suggestions I do it myself, I'm mechanically inept.. :)

I've used Fairweather Marine in Fareham and Bursledon Outboards, opposite Force 4 in, believe it or not, Bursledon.

No complaints about either, but they're both a bit of a hike from you.
Thanks Stemar.. had a couple of recommendations for Bursledon Outboards, so I'll give them a go... I like their fix price service offering as well.. half the price of the other main dealer I mentioned

I can always use it as an excuse to go have a cup of tea with my sister just down the road.. :D

When I had my first outboard powered boat I got it serviced by the local guy for about £50. PBO had a feature on servicing outboards which I read and thought it looked fairly simple and gave it a try - never looked back. My advice is give it a try despite your lack of expertise.

There's a new shop at Thornham Marina who may be worth a go - not used yet but might pop in there soon.

Was not totally impressed by South Coast Outboard Servicing in 2023 (iirc) - quite expensive and didn't get to the root of the issue, though to be fair, neither have I. These diagnoses are difficult so I wouldn't condemn them on the basis of this - a routine engine service was also done and as far as I could tell that side was good.

So why mention it in that context, have you managed to get the problem fixed? Maybe a reflection on the problem rather than the expertise of the engineer:unsure: Post the problem on here and the experts will resolve it in a flash:ROFLMAO:

So just to give some feedback.. went in to Bursledon Outboards yesterday and had the donk serviced.. they have a fixed price service deal based on engine size, and my experience of the transaction was good.. impellor and spark plug changed, oil change, filters done.. they also noted the leg anode needed doing so did it, and they also commented that the main dealer who had done the last service had overfilled her with oil. Interesting problem with the fly wheel, the nuts holding the cover were only finger tight so the wheel was rubbing the cover, must have been a new issue as I would have noticed it last year.. either way they're going to follow up with Tohatsu and see if it qualifies for a warranty deal as there are minor scratches on the fly wheel... and all that for less than two thirds of the price I was quoted from the dealer I bought it from (who had overfilled with oil) .. clearly I'll know at the end of the season whether the engine works as it should, but as of this moment, I recommend them completely.. good suggestion.
