I am considering (at last) buying my own Yacht. I need to understand what the associated costs are, in particular moorings or berthing. The potential boat is c. 30 ft. As far as mooring goes, the easier the better - however cost is a key consideration. I live near Wimborne, but could travel within reason. Any recommendations and any idea of costs?

Very helpful, is that due to industrial action at the CG?

There is a huge variety of moorings in Poole depending on your needs and budget but you will need to be more specific about what is required.

Marina berths at Salterns are the most expensive in the country, but better deals are available under the bridge at Davis's or even Cobb's Quay. Club marinas like at Poole YC, Parkstone YC and Royal Motor YC are much better but you have to be a member and waiting lists not surprisingly are long.

Moorings for boats which can take the ground are far more plentiful as Poole has lots of shallow water. Deepwater swinging moorings are still around but at a premium in cost. Apart from those owned by the YCs there are several contractors who lay and rent out moorings in various areas, from off the Quay area, Parkstone Bay, Hamworthy, Rockley, Sandbanks, Wych Channel (off Brownsea) and so on. I'm well out of touch with names and contact details let alone prices these days but do know there were some (even deepwater) available at the start of this season. My suggestion would be to call the Harbourmaster's Office and ask, they will have all the contractor's details for sure.

Be aware that finding the mooring is but one part of the job. You need to be able to get to it and that might mean an exposed dinghy trip across the harbour (some more upmarket mooring places run launch services) and so you will need a decent tender and outboard plus very importantly somewhere to launch it, maybe store it, and of course to park your car.

Since you live in Wimborne I wouldn't consider anywhere other than Poole to keep your boat, beautiful place with lots of options both inside and outside of the harbour an without the strong tides of the nearby Solent which can be a real pain.

I'm at Lakeyard Hamworthy - £900 for 41' with free water taxi. A guy called Stevenson also does swinging moorings for about £200 less with no taxi
