We are 45ft sailing yacht currently based in Sicily and on our way to Greece - Ionian Islands. We do not overwinter and just use the boat 3 to 4 times a year.

So I am keen to find an inexpensive winter lay up option, ideally with a combination of afloat and hard standing: afloat for September to end October and Hard Standing November through to end of March, afloat again for April, May and then onwards!

It seems there is no point in paying for an expensive marina during the winter months as we are not liveaboards and would not gain any benefit from their services.

Has anyone any experience which could be shared?

Many thanks

Paul

Preveza. Choice of 3 decent yards. Each of the yards users will swear the one they use is the best. I know which one I think is best but I am not going to restart a very old argument. :)

Good access in the summer. Workable off season if a little difficult. Good prices. Easy striking distance of all of the Ionian.

Despite bad bad things written about it we have spent several winters in Margarona Boatyard Preveza. Three main boatyards right hand side as you approach Prev. but go past and turn left. Why do I need to say this, most of you anchor in this area already. Magarona is the right side of town for shopping etc., Hassan's food across the road very good and a friendly establishment, plus you can walk up the road to Jimmy's one of the best fish places in the Ionian [Dad fishes daily out of St. Thomas] Folks have said yucky toilets etc.. but if things get bad you can be there in 2 mins. How long does it take in a big yard. Hey, we are not on a superyacht, definitely nowhere near, but if we had loads of dosh and Dimitris could cope with said boat we would want to stay in Margarona if poss, Not something we do, but believe you can live aboard during winter.

What is their boat handling equipment? As long as it is not like Messolonghis rubbish!!!

The trouble with these three boat yards is that they are SCRUFFY/DIRTY places. If you do not mind that then go for them However if you want a CLEAN/TIDY and caring MARINA/YARD go to Lefkas.

Good luck

Peter

Whilst agreeing that grinding debris on boats is far from ideal, I would point out that many owners grind iron and steel in most yards throughout the world, for which the yard can not really be blamed. A man with a steel boat was carrying out major work a few years ago in one of the yards: he was stopped by the management. All three Preveza yards have an enviable reputation for boat handling and storage, at a cost considerably less than Levkas the last time I checked.

I disagree about scruffy and dirty. Very few yards are subjects for oil paintings but at the yard I have used there is absolutely no litter, any leftover parts are removed very quickly and all the toilet, washing, laundry, etc., facilities are spotless.
