Recommendation for Copper Coat yard in south east

There are so many posts, articles, pub chats etc about Coppercoat. It seems that most people either say it's rubbish or they are not quite sure there is a benefit to be gained from the high initial cost or not. The manufacturers claim....well, quite a lot. My view (and I don't have any practical experience of the product to support this), is that if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

International Micron.....not cheap, but it works. And also, copper coat is such a nasty colour, if it went propper verdi-gris it be gorgeous and would make up fo rnot working, but its just...what is it?

Quite honestly I think it does work, but as with different brands of anti-foul better in some areas then others. The thing is what is the benefit of coppercoating and that is harder to answer.

If you have a bilge keel and can dry out for a scrub, then it is probably worth while, buy then again you could probably slap on some fresh anti-foul between tides.

I doubt I would do it again.

PS Didn't Dick Durham use a different brand this season(i.e. not Coppercoat) and it was a disaster for him?

Dick Durham's A/F was one of the ones where the copper powder is sprayed onto a tacky epoxy substrate. It fouled badly after a short time. The company came and reapplied it and it fouled very badly again. Don't know current status. His article said that his hull was worse than another one lifted at the same time, which had only been emulsion painted.

Coppercoat has worked extremely well for me. I only have my keel done in it as I hate painting it every year. The first time it was done it lasted about 8-9 years and was still working when the rust got beneath it and the whole lot had to be blasted off. During this time I had about 4-5 years in Holland, mostly fresh but some salt water, then 4-5 years getting to Greece. Never had any significant fouling.

Beginning of 2008 season the keel was blasted and epoxied by the yard and I applied Coppercoat myself. Performance has been excellent, far better than the conventional stuff on the hull. Each time hauled out there was absolutely nothing on the keel, not even slime.
