Yes, the Meaco DD8L will restart following a power failure, but the manufacturers do warn against cutting the power unnecessarily with it in operation. Dessicant dehumidifiers heat the dessicating disk up to a relatively high temperature and they are supposed to go through a controlled power-down when you switch them off. They certainly will survive the occasional power failure, but the manufacturer's advice is that frequent power failures will reduce the life expectancy.

I have one operating in an annex on a timer It comes on at 2am and off at 3am to use economy 7. It has worked without fault over 3 winters. I also have one on board which has worked all winter with the occasional interruption of power.

I suspect you may have problems with heat when its hot but not for winter use.

We had a couple of Ebac condenser type which came on with a plug in timer. After an energy survey by local environmental group, who said these were unnecessary and costly to run, we stopped using them.

If you have a humidity problem, a dehumidifier is far more efficient on energy use than the alternative of heat and ventillation. Even allowing for gas heating being at 3p/kwH compared to electricity at 15p, the 300W of my dehumidifier beats 3kW of heating in my garage.

There's dry and dry - if you kept duvets and clothes and soft cushions there you would notice a smell after a month or two.
