I have a bog standard car 12v hifi onboard with an aux socket for connecting in 1/8" stereo jack. Often, I play music from Spotify on my iphone through the stereo. This works well unless the phone is charging via the cheap 12v USB adaptor that I've got plugged into a cigarette socket. When I do this the background buzzing and noise is so loud that I can hear it over the music. When the fridge starts it gets even noisier...!

I'm pretty certain the noise is transmitted via the phone's headphone socket, rather than through the power supply to the stereo as the stereo will work happily play CDs and radio with no noise even if the phone is also charging.

So, can anyone recommend a not-too-expensive but good quality noise-free 12v to USB adaptor that will charge the phone and iPad but not cause interference? Nees to support 2A charging for the iPad.

This'll fix it.

I seem to recall that someone on here previously cured this problem by fixing a "ferrite" onto the charging cable. It's one of those cylindrical things you see on the leads of various pieces of electronic kit. Some of them are detachable and can be cannibalised from obsolete cables.

I bought a 12V Universal PSU from Hamble Marine. You just wire it into the 12v supply and it has two USB sockets on the end. Enough to power my ipad and Quark Wi-Fi transmitter. Think it was less than £20.

Does the car hifi have bluetooth? If so play the music via bluetooth and the charge cable shouldn't have an effect... hopefully.. :D
No bluetooth, unfortunately.

I've ordered a ground loop filter from Amazon - it connects in series between the phone cable and the stereo input jack. Will see if that helps.

I also did a load of digging around last night. It appears that 12V/USB chargers are also renowned for producing RF interference that can affect VHF radios, with no physical connection between the devices. I don;t think that is happening on my setup, but am now going to see whether the VHF is in anyway affected when charging the phone.

I've also bought a couple of ferrite beads that I'll clip onto the fridge power supply and supply to the VHF and stereo.
